Thanks for your quick response, Rod. Guess this means I need to plan on putting my menus at the top of the page. :-)
I can live with that. Off to download Backlight and start playing with it!

"The trays in Backlight don't drop below the main content. ..."
Is this envisioned as a permanent solution or will it be repaired in a later release? The tray on your sample page disappears in a narrow view port. I would not have known it was there had I not seen this post.

Thanks for the quick reply Rod. Bet you are busy today.
How will the Wordpress bundle discount work if I spring for Backlight + Pages now and then add the Wordpress tool later?
Bill
I have the CE4 Wordpress Bundle and am using it as you designed it with Wordpress but I also use Publisher to publish standalone galleries for Drupal based sites and hand coded (Dreamweaver) sites. Is there a way to go ahead and get Backlight (and potentially + pages) and begin work on the standalone sites then phase in the Wordpress features when you release them. The key is to do the phasing without losing my Wordpress bundle discount if possible. I purchased CE4 (2014?) over a year ago so my discount won't be significant, but I'd like to take advantage of whatever discount is available to me by upgrading to the new bundle. As expected at this time my orders have no discount codes associated with them.
Congratulations on getting Backlight to market. I really look forward to using it.

I've encountered an interesting situation with image files containing ")" or "(" in their file name. These characters are valid file naming characters based on all sources I can find, and while I don't produce images containing them, I do receive some from other sources who may have created a duplicate image on their system (e.g., filename(2).jpg) or used the old Microsoft image resizing tool to resize images submitted for publication (e.g., filename(medium).jpg).
I can make the situation go away with some pain by manually removing the ")" or "(" from the file name of the 350 or so submitted images in my lightroom catalog. I am documenting it here in case another user encounters the situation or you guys have time to take a look at it.
Here are the facts:
I am running CE4 Publisher 2.3.0b and Gallery 6.1.6. And Lightroom 6.
Thumbnails without ")" or "(" in film name are rendered properly on gallery index pages and the large image format overlay produced by magnific on both desktop and mobile clients.
Thumbnails with ")" or "(" in file name are rendered properly on gallery desktop index pages, but the link to the large image format does not produce a large image overlay. Nothing happens when the thumbnail image on the index page is selected.
Thumbnails with ")" or "(" in file name are not included in gallery mobile index pages regardless of the large image rendering tool selected in the gallery template. Thumbnails without ")" or "(" in file name are rendered properly in the mobile index pages.
On a mobile client:
I can click on a thumbnail and the related large image overlay will be rendered properly.
If the Gallery template is set up to render large image overlays using magnific, I can advance from large image to large image (flip through using the ">" link) for images which have a thumbnail image displayed on the index page. When I get to the last large image which has a thumbnail displayed on the index page, I can advance no further.
If the Gallery template is set up to render large image overlays using touch, I can advance through ALL large images. In other words, unlike with magnific, when I get to the last large image overlay which has a thumbnail displayed on the index page, I can keep advancing to the end of the images.
I have not tried to recreate this situation with other odd-ball file name characters.

That worked, Rod.
My only issue was forgetting to add the markdown text to the Content / Description section of the template, and had to move things over a second time.
FYI, at Matthew's suggestion I started using Coda for modifications. It saved me a bunch of time over previous methods.

Are you suggesting that I take the contents of the /nfarlPhotoAlbum/ttg-be/templates/autoindex/gallery folder and place them in the /nfarlPhotoAlbums/gallery folder?
basically, yes. Though if you want to create album sets you should leave the 'gallery' autoindex in the ttg-be/templates/autoindex/ folder so it can be used as a template for Publisher.
inside the /nfarlPhotoAlbums/gallery/ folder you should also have folders for all your albums. You don't need to replace those. Just the files originally created by CE3 autoindex.
Sounds good. I will definitely leave the 'gallery' autoindex in the ttg-be/templates/autoindex/ folder.
Thanks for your guidance and patience.

rod barbee wrote: No. replace the 'gallery' autoindex currently in the /nfarlPhotoAlbum/ folder
The current contents of the /nfarlPhotoAlbum/ folder are:
_workPages folder
gallery folder
ttg-be folder
Inside the /nfarlPhotoAlbum/gallery folder are several files and folders also found in the /nfarlPhotoAlbum/ttg-be/templates/autoindex/gallery folder such as:
autoindex.xml
galleries_ce3.xml (only in the /nfarlPhotoAlbum/gallery folder )
index.php
template_index.php
photos folder
thumbnails folder
Are you suggesting that I take the contents of the /nfarlPhotoAlbum/ttg-be/templates/autoindex/gallery folder and place them in the /nfarlPhotoAlbums/gallery folder?
Whew, I need another cuppa coffee after sorting that out :-)
this page: http://www.nfarl.org/nfarlPhotoAlbum/gallery/
looks to be an exported and uploaded CE3 autoindex and not a Publisher controlled Album Set. It won't be controlled by the autoindex you upload to ttg-be/templates/autoindex.
Ah ha! At least I now know which sandbox to play in!
Album Sets are new with CE4 latest release, right? Is an Album Set required for a gallery? I read it as a feature to be used when its capabilities were required.
You need to export a new CE4 autoindex named 'gallery' and replace the existing autoindex.
In the ttg-be/templates/autoindex folder?
I'm also guessing the it's the top-level galleries folder for Publisher?
I don't understand.
have you tried replacing the old CE3 autoindex template with one created with CE4 autoindex?
I did. I placed it in the ttg-be auto index template folder. Should it have gone elsewhere?
I have - a number of times. That included making a number of versions of the CE4 template.
And I have deleted every copy of CE3 templates I can find hoping to trip something that will cause it to recognize the CE4 auto index.
I have completely republished the gallery and all of its albums.
I have removed the CE3 .lrengine files.
I cannot figure out where publisher is getting the CE3 auto index template info to use when I republish. Is it left in the database? I've refrained from messing with it. .
I can build a new publisher instance and recreate the gallery, but am trying to avoid the pain. Is there a way to "move" or "copy" albums from one publisher instance to another? Similar to the process I used when I created a duplicate of the CE4 default template I used as a base and moved the duplicate to my user templates area for mods.
Thanks for your quick response Rod.
I converted a gallery from CE3 to CE4 after building and uploading new CE4 templates for the gallery and its auto index per instructions on the site here. The published gallery's albums are properly built using the new CE4 template. Unfortunately the Auto Index is not -- it was built using a prior obsolete auto index template. You can see the live auto index at http://www.nfarl.org/nfarlPhotoAlbum/gallery/; drill through to one of its albums to see the CE4 presentation (first cut).
The following was displayed when I scanned the album using Matthew's handy debugging tool -- ?debug:
TTG CE3 Auto Index PHP function v1.7 (2012-01-10)
DOCUMENT ROOT '/home3/nfarl/public_html'

OS Path = '/home3/nfarl/public_html/nfarlPhotoAlbum/gallery/2014-holiday-party' URL Path = '/nfarlPhotoAlbum/gallery/2014-holiday-party'

How do I recover from this?
Bill Cobb
dead give-away to my age but it was my reaction when I saw Matt's comment.
egads - ROOKIE mistake. When setting up Publish Services for the CE4 version of the gallery I set it to push metadata without updating existing photos.
Thanks for the feedback Matt.
Bill
Forgot to mention that the issue appears in larger screen sizes - laptops and up. The index pages look OK on my iPhone.
Bill Cobb
I installed the latest update today, and am very impressed with the new features in all modules and the quality of the large images created by the Magnific tool. Kudos Matt!!
After the software updates, I had an issue with index pages for galleries that contained a mix of landscape and portrait thumbnails, but found a workaround that will work for now. Hope there is a better solution.
Prior to installing Gallery 604b, index pages created by gallery and containing mixed portrait / landscape thumbnails were created properly. With 604b in place, row spacing caused thumbnails to overlap as shown here http://innkeepersgazette.com/wrdp/galleries/sprinter/ and here http://innkeepersgazette.com/wrdp/galleries/izabella/ (toward the bottom of the index page). The workaround was simple, and resulted in an index page that looks like this: http://innkeepersgazette.com/wrdp/galle … raduation/
Republishing a collection did not correct the thumbnail overlaps. Here is what I had to do to remove the overlaps from the last index page:
remove the portrait image from the publish services collection
update the gallery on the server
add the portrait image back to the collection
modify the sort sequence of the collection to put the images back in the order I wanted (image date & time) (nice feature Matt)
mark the entire collection to be republished
republish the collection
I'll correct the other mixed pages after you have had a chance to see them.
Matt, is there a better way for those with a large number of mixed-orientation collections to handle this?
Bill Cobb
Thanks Matt. It does indeed work. Counterintuitive tho - I never would've figured it out by myself.
I seem to be hitting on all cylinders with the updated site now. Thanks for creating this great product suite!

Placing a copy of the first paragraph of my posting into the excerpt area worked. The Home page showed the full content that was placed there.
However, there was a footnote in the WP post excerpt area that linked to the following and may prove helpful to others. Guess I need to do more research into the the_content() template tag.
Excerpt, automatic excerpt, and teaser
The manual WordPress excerpt is often confused with the automatic excerpt or with the teaser (the part of a post that appears on the front page when you use the More tag). While both are related to the manual excerpt, they are different from it.The relationship between the three is this: When a post has no manual excerpt and the post template uses the the_excerpt() template tag, WordPress generates an excerpt automatically by selecting the first 55 words of the post. When the post template uses the the_content() template tag, WordPress will look for the More tag and create a teaser from the content that precedes the More tag.
Bill
What you described is the way I have it set up.
Plus I set the "more" tag at the end of the first paragraph (WP sets it inside the closing paragraph tag).
WP using the TTG CE4 theme breaks the excerpt in the middle of the first paragraph, ignoring the tag setting.
WP using the Twenty Fourteen theme breaks properly at the end of the first paragraph.
I will try the excerpt form window you mentioned.
Bill
I can find nothing in the documentation about author set "more..." breakpoints in blog home page excerpts when the full post is not displayed on the home page. The feature does not work in the CE4 Theme for WordPress, and did not work in the CE3 theme.
Is this by design, or did I miss something? If I activate the Twenty Fourteen theme, I can set the breakpoint as instructed in the WP documentation.
This is not a major issue, but is an annoyance. I like to let the reader compete the initial paragraph before forcing him to open the full post.
FYI, I have installed all CE4 updates except for the last (email dated 8/5). I am trying to get my site stable before
applying the latest update.
Matt, thanks for the great product. I finally have the CE4 WordPress bundle up and running and love the new approaches. Keep up the great work. And thanks to Rod for his great support as I sorted out transition issues.
I have a few more questions. Based on the following:
Depending on whether your template names match between CE3 and CE4 Publisher, you may need to
edit each album and choose a new template before being able to publish further to that album.
... I tried to create another template for CE4 with the same name as the CE3 template. Lightroom will not let me have two templates with the same name even though the CE4 template is located in a separate LR template directory.
Is there a way around this?
If I have to select a new template after the migration process, does this mean that I will have to create a new album title, slug, description, et cetera?
Bill Cobb
Thanks Rod. I think I understand it now and will give it a shot tomorrow.
Have a good weekend!
Bill Cobb
Thanks for the quick reply Rod.
My understanding of the migration concept may be the issue. I interpreted the following to mean that we would be migrating files in a source galleries folder on the server to a destination galleries folder on the server:
To migrate galleries, click on the Lightroom File menu, then Plug-in Extras, followed by Migrate
galleries from CE3 Publisher to CE4 Publisher. Select your source and destination then click OK.
Only those galleries that exist both in Lightroom and on the server will be copied. After migration, the
albums and album sets should be manageable via the CE4 Publisher instance.
Are we actually migrating the galleries in LR on my local computer to CE4? After which we would clean up any remaining issues and then republish them to the existing directories on the server?
The latter makes more sense after thinking about how TTG uses LR resources.
Bill Cobb
Re the mechanics of migrating from CE3 to CE4, what does the following from the Wiki mean?
2. The top-level galleries folder (the target folder) must match between CE3 and CE4.
I am currently using CE3 for WordPress, and have installed WordPress and the CE3 directories as shown here:
http://mydomain/wrdp/
http://mydomain/wrdp/galleries/
http://mydomain/wrdp/publisher/
http://mydomain/wrdp/ttg-be/
http://mydomain/wrdp/wp-admin
http://mydomain/wrdp/ -etc-
Am I supposed to create another galleries directory somewhere? If so, where do you suggest?
My web site is currently a traditional site with a static home page containing a link to my WordPress blog (CE3 themed). It is being transitioned to a site with the blog (CE4 themed) as the home page. It will not be a photoblog - blog entries will be articles with embedded images, galleries, and links to CE4 galleries.
I struggled with the organization of the galleries and publisher directories when initially installing CE3 this spring and settled on the organization shown above based on input from this forum. Is this still the best organization given my expected use of CE4 or would another approach serve my needs better.
Thanks,
Bill Cobb
