In CE4 Pages I had some pages that were two columns. As the width narrowed the second column would drop down underneath the first.
Is this possible in Backlight at the moment? I can get the second column to disappear into a tray, but not to just move down in the main area.

The trays in Backlight don't drop below the main content. View them on mobile by clicking the "hamburger" icons that appear.
However, you can have text columns that will stack when the browser width narrows by using the Responsive Grid Framework (nearly the same as that available in CE3 and CE4. It requires using html.

Is this envisioned as a permanent solution or will it be repaired in a later release? The tray on your sample page disappears in a narrow view port. I would not have known it was there had I not seen this post.

Nothing to repair, that's how it's designed.
When the browser gets narrow enough, then the hamburger icons appear on the top of the page. The icons are placed according to the position of the sidebar.

As mentioned above, if you want content to always appear on the page, then use the Responsive Grid Framework.

Thanks for your quick response, Rod. Guess this means I need to plan on putting my menus at the top of the page. :-)
I can live with that. Off to download Backlight and start playing with it!

For the desktop, the nav menu can be either under the masthead going across the page (example here) or it can be in one of the trays (example here).
For mobile, the only place for the nav menu will be in one of the trays.

Your example site is a very good reference Rod. I had missed a trick in understanding trays especially when it comes to navigation on a mobile device. Is it a fair assumption to make that in order to deliver consistent user experience there should always be a tray to facilitate navigation on a mobile?
I'm messing about - (quite quickly) with Backlight. It is light years ahead of CE4 from my perspective as I do not normally tread in the design areas much after I have what I want with the least amount of interference by me.

Yes. In fact, that's the only way to have navigation on mobile devices.
There is a page breakpoint setting at the top of the Page Layout area in the Template Designer that can drop the breakpoint down to 992px. This will allow tablets (in landscape) to show the same navigation as on the desktop. However, since there is no :hover state on touch devices, the drop-down navigation menus don't work well.
