I converted a gallery from CE3 to CE4 after building and uploading new CE4 templates for the gallery and its auto index per instructions on the site here. The published gallery's albums are properly built using the new CE4 template. Unfortunately the Auto Index is not -- it was built using a prior obsolete auto index template. You can see the live auto index at http://www.nfarl.org/nfarlPhotoAlbum/gallery/; drill through to one of its albums to see the CE4 presentation (first cut).
The following was displayed when I scanned the album using Matthew's handy debugging tool -- ?debug:

have you tried replacing the old CE3 autoindex template with one created with CE4 autoindex?

I have - a number of times. That included making a number of versions of the CE4 template.
And I have deleted every copy of CE3 templates I can find hoping to trip something that will cause it to recognize the CE4 auto index.
I have completely republished the gallery and all of its albums.
I have removed the CE3 .lrengine files.
I cannot figure out where publisher is getting the CE3 auto index template info to use when I republish. Is it left in the database? I've refrained from messing with it. .
I can build a new publisher instance and recreate the gallery, but am trying to avoid the pain. Is there a way to "move" or "copy" albums from one publisher instance to another? Similar to the process I used when I created a duplicate of the CE4 default template I used as a base and moved the duplicate to my user templates area for mods.

I did. I placed it in the ttg-be auto index template folder. Should it have gone elsewhere?

it should be in the /ttg-be/templates/autoindex/ folder. Can you post a link to it?

looks to be an exported and uploaded CE3 autoindex and not a Publisher controlled Album Set. It won't be controlled by the autoindex you upload to ttg-be/templates/autoindex.
You need to export a new CE4 autoindex named 'gallery' and replace the existing autoindex.
I'm also guessing the it's the top-level galleries folder for Publisher?

Ah ha! At least I now know which sandbox to play in!
Album Sets are new with CE4 latest release, right? Is an Album Set required for a gallery? I read it as a feature to be used when its capabilities were required.

No. replace the 'gallery' autoindex currently in the /nfarlPhotoAlbum/ folder

In Publisher set up you need to identify the 'top-level galleries folder'. This is where Publisher puts albums and album sets.
Since you have albums inside this folder: http://nfarl.org/nfarlPhotoAlbum/gallery/ I'm assuming that it has to be your top-level gallery folder.

No, they've been part of Publisher all along.
Is an Album Set required for a gallery?
No. Only if you want to organize your albums into related groups. Album Set will hold Albums. For example, on my site I have an album set named "National Parks". Inside that album set are my National Parks albums.

The current contents of the /nfarlPhotoAlbum/ folder are:
_workPages folder
gallery folder
ttg-be folder
Inside the /nfarlPhotoAlbum/gallery folder are several files and folders also found in the /nfarlPhotoAlbum/ttg-be/templates/autoindex/gallery folder such as:
autoindex.xml
galleries_ce3.xml (only in the /nfarlPhotoAlbum/gallery folder )
index.php
template_index.php
photos folder
thumbnails folder

Sounds good. I will definitely leave the 'gallery' autoindex in the ttg-be/templates/autoindex/ folder.

That worked, Rod.
My only issue was forgetting to add the markdown text to the Content / Description section of the template, and had to move things over a second time.
FYI, at Matthew's suggestion I started using Coda for modifications. It saved me a bunch of time over previous methods.
