#76 Re: Backlight 3 Support » Use of new function RSS Feeds » 2020-05-03 04:46:09

The main feed is for the entire site.

You may also provide album-specific feeds. These are:

site.com/set/album/feed

By which I mean, put "/feed" at the end of any album URL.

As the main site feed is what's in the head, though, you'll need to provide your own buttons for this. I'm planning to do a feature about RSS feeds soon; hopefully this weekend, if I can get away from support or feeding myself long enough to make it happen.

For a generic RSS feed, you can put this Markdown into any of the copy sections for your album or album template:

[Album RSS Feed](./feed/)

EDIT:
The striked-out sentence is misinformation. Albums do present their own album-specific feed in the head, and so it should not be required to create your own feed link for the album. I mean, you can if you want to, but the feed should be discoverable in the usual ways without it.

#77 Re: Backlight Support » Need some help » 2020-05-03 04:40:33

We supply the Okapi templates for transitional purposes. The Pangolin templates were introduced mid-life for Backlight 1, but not everyone adopted them. We provide the Okapi templates so that such users will not be suddenly faced with a broken or undesigned website after upgrading to Backlight 2. At this stage, however, you should be using the Pangolin templates; Okapi is retired.

#78 Re: Backlight 3 Customization » Disable Single Image Pages » 2020-05-03 04:38:04

Single-image pages render images using static HTML and responsive CSS, and scale images on the x-axis, based on screen width. This is exactly the desired behavior. And without the single-image pages, you won't be able to share images to social media at all; without them, sharing the URL for any particular image would not be sharing the image, it would be sharing the gallery.

#80 Re: Backlight 3 Support » Bought BL3, nothing happen » 2020-05-02 05:20:28

Thanks. I've located the transaction record and have emailed you directly. I'm going to close this thread.

#81 Re: Backlight 3 Support » Bought BL3, nothing happen » 2020-05-02 03:05:38

Thanks for the email. It looks to me like your bank/credit card company is the one holding up the transaction. Have you contacted them about the purchase?

#82 Re: Backlight 3 Support » Bought BL3, nothing happen » 2020-05-02 01:56:09

That's odd. I've not observed any issues with the checkout flow. Some fluke behavior, certainly.

Have you managed to get the order through yet, or are things still pending? I'm sure what I can do on this side of things, since all I'm seeing is an abandoned checkout, but happy to help in whatever way I can.

Maybe try again, and if we end up with duplicate orders at some point, let me know and we'll reverse one.

And to be honest my main issue is the upgrade asking price every 18-24 months. Again, owning the fact that we don't have to upgrade, but still. I think those of us that are willing to upgrade from one version to the very next one should be offered a steeper discount.

With this release, we're no longer charging upgrade fees for add-ons. If you only have Backlight 2, that won't impact you much; but for some, that's a very steep discount indeed.

#85 Re: Backlight 3 Support » Bought BL3, nothing happen » 2020-05-01 06:11:05

I've found your Backlight 2 orders, and I see an abandoned checkout for Backlight 3, but I'm not able to find a completed purchase. Did you finish the checkout?

#86 Re: Backlight 3 Support » Bought BL3, nothing happen » 2020-05-01 06:09:16

Sounds like you might have to a typo in your email address when placing your order. Can you email me directly? I'll take a look in the meantime and see whether I can sort it out on my own.

#87 Re: Announcements & Information » Major difference between Backlight 2 & 3? » 2020-05-01 04:25:17

Also, purchasing Backlight 3 helps to ensure there will be further updates to Backlight 3 over its lifespan, and there will eventually be a Backlight 4.

But if features are what you're interested in, then the headline features are all laid out in the announcement.

#88 Re: Backlight 3 Support » Lazy-loading throttle » 2020-05-01 04:22:23

Pangolin is so much better! And that's where we've put all of the new work for the last what ... 2 ... 3 years? ;-)

#89 Re: Backlight 3 Support » Unexpected error: Module 'sqlite3' already loaded » 2020-05-01 03:19:24

Thanks, Kyle. Ben will need to take a look when he's online again. I reckon he'll be waking up in a few hours.

#90 Re: Backlight 3 Support » GDPR Notice & Acceptance Notice » 2020-05-01 02:33:41

Okay. If you have some reading to share, European regulations are a moving target, and this is something we will hopefully be able to continually improve. Though in the case of Google Analytics, Google also needs to provide us appropriate tools.

#91 Re: Backlight 3 Support » New Documentation » 2020-05-01 02:19:33

... and done. The "Docs" item in the menu goes to the new place.

#92 Re: Backlight 3 Support » New Documentation » 2020-05-01 02:17:45

Calling me out. Now I've got to rummage around in the guts of the forum software to find the menus ...

#93 Re: Backlight 3 Support » JSON » 2020-05-01 02:16:09

That's a neat idea, and one I hadn't thought much about. We'll surely discuss it, and see where it leads ... my hope is this is just the beginning for the JSON API, and that we'll be able to expand it to do more heavy lifting over time.

#94 Re: Backlight 3 Support » New Version didn't appear - Different Email for purchase? » 2020-05-01 02:13:43

I've updated your Backlight 3 order to use the same email as your Backlight 2 order. The upgrade should work for you now.

In the future, though, please don't expose your email address in the forum. Bots may find it. Just email me the next time and I'll sort you out.

#95 Re: Backlight 3 Support » GDPR Notice & Acceptance Notice » 2020-04-30 17:19:46

Of course, if the analytics isn't that important to you, you can of course disable it entirely. Personally, I never look at analytics, and so I stopped using it ages ago. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

#96 Re: Backlight 3 Support » GDPR Notice & Acceptance Notice » 2020-04-30 17:18:26

It's as compliant as it can be, and I fail to see how it's in violation of European law. They visitor is consenting to accept cookies on your website. If they opt-out of Google Analytics, then we set a cookie that tells Google Analytics not to run; they are consenting to that cookie. Thereafter, they are not being tracked.

If you'd like to read more about Google Analytics and GDPR, I found this article:
https://www.cookiebot.com/en/google-analytics-gdpr/

Here's another:
https://adzerk.com/blog/gdpr-google-analytics/

Between the cookies notice and consent, the opt-out of Google Analytics, and the Privacy Policy -- which I suggest you use, if you don't already have one -- I think we're well covered.

#97 Re: Backlight 3 Support » GDPR Notice & Acceptance Notice » 2020-04-30 16:32:52

If checked, then you are opting-out of tracking. The "accept" then refers to other things, such as cookies which are essential to the operation of the site (and which, is therefore, fully allowed under our reading of European law). The Turning Gate is also running on Backlight, so please read our Privacy page, which goes into more detail about what it being accepted:
http://theturninggate.net/privacy/

Similar would apply to your site.

#98 Re: Backlight 3 Support » GDPR Notice & Acceptance Notice » 2020-04-30 16:13:05

Hi Andreas,

The script is "there" in the page's source code, but if the user has opted-out, then Google will not track them. This has been implemented according to Google's opt-out documentation, here:
https://developers.google.com/analytics … er-opt-out

#100 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Trouble with Galleria page length and fitting photos » 2020-04-07 11:21:22

Looks to me like you need to adjust the aspect ratio in your Galleria template.
