#26 Backlight 2 Support » Maps? » 2019-02-25 05:35:12

Despite setting "enable maps" and having map data, I see no way to utilize it. Where should the maps buttons be? Do I have to enable something in designer?

It took me a long time of frustration to figure out that after changing captions, you need to republish. It says that on the tokens explanation page, but it might be useful to have it right on the Backlight interface where you edit tokens. My error was in just looking for token names, since that is what I was typing in.

My fault, but a prompt right on the design interface would have saved a lot of frustration.

Set image captions using metadata tokens, described here. You must re-publish for changes to take effect

Indeed. Quit Lightroom, replete in finder. Plug in is now at 4.0.7

#29 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Virtual Copies not publishing correct image file » 2019-02-24 05:48:49

What is the proper procedure to update the Publisher plug-in in Lightroom? Just replace the actual plug-in in the finder or actually remove and re-add the service (which sounds like a disaster).

If I want to underline links ONLY on the "Main Copy" of the album (not, for example, the navigation) could I do that with custom CSS? What might be the syntax?

#32 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Virtual Copies not publishing correct image file » 2019-02-22 09:27:21

Are you using the latest version of Publisher?

Possibly not? I first installed backlight January 6th. So it's that version.

What is the proper procedure for updating the plug-in (and how would I be notified to do so)?

If you're using a non-virtual copy to edits come through, or only an unmodified rendition?

If I "edit in photoshop" "with adjustments from Lightroom" then save and replace the virtual copy with that tiff, it works fine (with edits applied). Though in that process I renamed the resulting tif files, so that may have poisoned the result (EDIT-EDIT-EDIT-3.tiff was not a good idea)

If I have a virtual copy of a tiff, Backlight Publisher only publishes the original tiff, not the edited virtual copy (commonly I use this for B&W variants)

Publishing virtual copies of DNGs work fine, but not tiffs.

Lightroom bug or Publisher bug?

#34 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Complete reinstall question » 2019-02-22 08:39:08

The other day I found a Lr plugin that allows you to mark album trees for publishing. I think that's exactly what you need. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I saw it sad

You can right-click on the top level of an album tree and mark to republish. But it errors out if you try to publish, giving the "you must edit this album" error (three times)

Until you edit something on every every album and album set, you can't publish. Once you do that (assuming you haven't run into the other land mines I have found) it will publish an entire 'tree'. I've been publishing a tree for about 4 hours now. Still have one part of the tree that is in the wrong album level set. Trying to figure out why. It actually looks fine in backlight, but its in a different album set in Lightroom

#35 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Complete reinstall question » 2019-02-22 05:43:00

One other thing I have found in this process. If you have messed up directory structure, Lightroom can't save changes or re-publish albums that are in the wrong place (not in their album set folder). The solution is to delete the set in the Backlight admin interface. Then you can make some change to the set and albums and get them to publish.

So, to recap:
in order to re-publish albums already published from Lightroom to a "new" instance of Backlight, you must "edit" each album set and album (which literally means change something, seems like any change will do) and and after a change is made, that album (or Album set) can be republished.

I hope this helps someone else. What a maze of workarounds

#36 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Complete reinstall question » 2019-02-21 07:35:45

With all the leftover CE files, unless albums were migrated from CE3 to CE4 and then on to Backlight, you might be stuck with completely republishing them.

That is actually what I am trying to do. They were migrated from CE3 to CE4 (back when CE4 came out) and then to Backlight this year. Now I am just trying to republish them cleanly. Without rebuilding 300plus albums (and copy/pasting all the text)

This is not a Backlight problem, it's Adobe being obtuse, but hopefully the next person that runs across this find this helpful.

#37 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Complete reinstall question » 2019-02-21 07:32:14

Another update, I have figured out how to make sure everything appears in the correct structure

Apparently Lightroom needs to see an actual change on the album. Like change the "number of items per page" (but seemingly NOT the slug name). Then it will publish the Album inside the album set.

I have 300+ albums to edit.. ugh

(I am putting all this out here in the hope that it helps someone else)

#38 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Complete reinstall question » 2019-02-21 07:06:56

Well, that's not working

Where previously, the directory structure was:

Collections
   Parks
      ak
         Juneau
   Trips
      Mtn Biking
         Mackenzie River
      Atlas Obscura
      Eclipse April

Now it is:

Collections
   Atlas Obscura
   Eclipse April
   Juneau
   Mackenzie River
   Mtn Biking
   Parks
     ak
   Trips
      Mtn Biking
         Mackenzie River

So it has lost some, but not all, hierarchy

This is clearly a Lightroom problem, just not sure how to fix it. No changes to the structure in Lightroom (the albums are in album sets)

#39 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Complete reinstall question » 2019-02-21 06:11:21

Update;

It seems to be working albeit slowly. Every album gets three of the error:

Unable to perform action: getSetupForTemplate
Message: The album could not be found for id 81414. Please edit this album and try again.

which each have to be dismissed. Then one must double-click on the album and click "edit" to save it. Then it will publish

My National Parks collection alone has 62 albums published, so this will take a while.

But it does seem to work properly. It will just take a lot of clicking

#40 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Complete reinstall question » 2019-02-21 06:06:00

Yeah, my galleries are polluted with a lot of compromised php files. Also a lot of leftover CE3 and CE4 files, so not really an option

For various reasons due to my not cleaning old things out, my photo site is heavily compromised (best guess is an old unused Wordpress install that I had forgotten about). None of this has anything to do with Backlight.

Seems like the easiest answer is just just wipe out the whole thing and install fresh. I have around 100 galleries however

I've exported my templates, but I don't see any other backup restore functions.

So, if I start over, will I be able to just re-publish all my various albums that are in Lightroom? This seems the easiest and I presume the directory structure and page copy will be created from Lightroom as I publish.

I am screen-shorting all of the menus for reference, but a backup and restore would be handy. I don't see any way to do so.

Any other advice?

#42 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Pangolin Theater, Vegas Slideshow, controls » 2019-02-04 02:03:06

I’ve spent a lot of time digging through the forums and there are hints tha Galleria handles scaling better, I may give that a try.

I’ve also looked at every site I could find linked here and I see none that combine portrait and landscape in the same slideshow, what have all those people found that I haven’t yet?  So I am going to take that out of the equation as well.

#43 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Pangolin Theater, Vegas Slideshow, controls » 2019-02-03 01:05:44

So in theory (for inline slideshow) I should set max-width and image size to look good on 5k monitors, and the responsive layout should downscale the slideshow for smaller screens. Which it sort of does, but not quite enough (images do not scale down enough, they scroll off the bottom)

It seems like it should work, but I can’t figure out what setting I am missing...

Again in theory, for full screen show, top-palette and footer can provide virtual matting, and conceptually some CSS should be able set the max width of the “screen” in th same way. Padding is not that setting.

#44 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Pangolin Theater, Vegas Slideshow, controls » 2019-02-02 11:55:53

Ironically, my test page does exactly what I want on the iPad:
IMG_0488.png

I am sure it is accidental and its not supposed to wink

#45 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Pangolin Theater, Vegas Slideshow, controls » 2019-02-02 10:55:38

I also figured out that I can not retroactively change the "Page Template" of an Album Template.

Sure you can.
But if you’re using the Vegas Full screen, it’s going to still try to be full screen.

No, if I change the "Page Template" drop down to a different template, that action has no effect. I know I should be able to, but it does not actually change anything.

It might help to post a link to what you’re working on

that was in the original post, but it's home page at https://www.lightsmithy.com

My full screen test is at: https://www.lightsmithy.com/portfolio/test/ (the "test page" in the menu)

Again, "large enough? and "for what". How does the size of the image affect the display in a Vegas slideshow? Presumably it won't upscale. How do I know what size they should be? (and how does Retina affect all of this). There is nothing in the documentation that I can find, so I am just guessing "as big as I could want to see them" and maybe x2 for retina.

#46 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Pangolin Theater, Vegas Slideshow, controls » 2019-02-02 10:29:24

Are the images large enough?

the landscapes are mostly 1920x1280 (some are 2048 wide) are the portraits are 960x1440. Is that large enough? and "for what"? If I QuickLook them, they are much bigger than the site is displaying

Have you limited the page width (in Layout)?

1920 in the page template. I am unclear on what, precisely, this limits.

I also figured out that I can not retroactively change the "Page Template" of an Album Template. I can change it in the drop-down, but that doesn't seem to have any effect (yes, I have been clearing the template cache every time). I made a new test page for examining the full-page template path;

There appears to be no way to have any left-right padding that way. The image is all the way to the edge of the viewport (thus no virtual 'matting'). Again, that would seem to be implied in "full screen" except its not full screen top to bottom. Frustrating. I don't actually want Full Screen, I want the scaling behavior of the Full Screen mode.

#47 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Pangolin Theater, Vegas Slideshow, controls » 2019-02-02 09:45:53

Here is the nature of the problem:
(these all display the same page, max-width 1200), 5k on top, then 1080p, then iPad)
backlight-sizes.png

Full screen Vegas: http://backlight.theturninggate.net/doc … n_vegas_fs
Be sure to click on the link about creating a full screen page template

That creates a page with no menu visible by default (breakpoint=always), which is unacceptable as a home page (where you want to lead people into an action)

I tried creating one with top pallet navigation, but I can't get it to apply (as in the home page theater does not appear to use it, despite having set it to use in in the "page temple" pull down. Do I have to create a new theater to apply it? I'll poke at it for a while. If I can get a "full screen" with a visible top pallet and footer, that may be good enough (can I still do a custom footer?)

I think I understand the aspect ratio usage now. Thank you

Now, how do I control size and scaling? The only control I seem to have is max-width. If I set it so that (a 3:2 aspect) frame fits properly height wise (I can still see the footer) on a 1080p monitor, it still is too big on an iPad and is tiny with huge amounts of padding on the 5k iMac screen. If I increase width so that it nicely fills the 5k, it is way too big (tall) on 1080p. What am I missing to get it to downsize for the shorter viewport? (like it does in fullscreen mode, so it obviously can)

#49 Re: Backlight 2 Support » Pangolin Theater, Vegas Slideshow, controls » 2019-02-02 08:13:35

Full screen mode almost does what I want. Though if I set a bottom margin I lose captions, and top margin appears to not do anything at all.

Is it possible to contain a full screen within top and bottom margins? (from the term, it is implied not, yet I can have a bottom margin, so that implies full screen can be less than full)

I have not been able to find documentation about what the various options do in the Vegas slideshow. I've yet to make it do what I want. There are so many variables that it is really difficult to figure out what is going on by experimentation. Is there documentation for what the various controls (like aspect ration) do? I need a setup guide.

What I want is to have the slide show adjust by page size such that it is always the maximum height or width that will fit on the screen, allowing for the header and footer (so that neither portrait nor landscape photos will fall off the page) I always want my footer (where the social icons now reside) visible. Basically so that the photos will scale within the viewport whether it's a 5K iMac or 1080p monitor an iPad or an iphone. I've yet to find settings that will work on all of them.
