Hi guys,
With Matt's suggestion to increase the width (counter intuitive - I would never have guessed this!!) and Rod's guidance on republishing it has fixed the problem, so thank you both. I created a dedicated template for that gallery with the width cranked up to 327px.
Puzzled as to why this problem never cropped up before in other galleries where I have tall thin images.
As always, thanks for your help, yet again. Great service!!
Mike
Hi Rod,
For the template in question in Album Settings >> Image Settings >> Thumbnails
I have width 168px, height 327 px.
I have experimented with increasing the height figure but it didn't seem to make any difference so I returned it to 327px on the basis of "change only one thing at a time"!
Mike
Hi,
I have just created a new gallery for stained glass windows http://picsbymike.co.uk/galleries/ttg-0 … ned-glass/
some of the images are tall and thin - the nature of the subject. There seems to be a constraint on how high the image can be in the masonary view and so this leaves excessive spaces between some of the images which you can see on the web page above.
Is there a template setting I can change to overcome this?
Thanks,
Mike
No......oops!
I had looked and looked but did not see that little mistake. And I had obviously done that some time ago correctly for the other template.
Thanks - so simple.
Mike
I am tidying up the detailed implementation of my website and have noticed that my custom css to centre the copyright is working fine on all but one page. The errant page is the home page which has a unique template.
My custom.css file has the following code:
.copyright p{text-align: center;}
But on the home page the copyright footer sticks to the default 'align right'.
I thought that custom css should apply itself to all pages?
I created another test page using the same template and it too has right aligned footer. So is it something to do with the template? I cannot find anything that would force this behaviour.
It's not a big issue but for the sake of consistency it would be nice to bring the home page into line with the others.
Any ideas? Thanks,
Mike
I use Zerene Stacker - I also tried Helicon but found Zerene easier to use.
Mike
Hi,
Finally it's done - or as done as ever done can be!
I went from CE3 to Backlight skipping CE4 altogether by doing a complete manual rebuild and taking the opportunity to change things considerably. I ran a test site alongside my old site in a sub-folder which worked fine.
The whole process went incredibly smoothly and Backlight is a joy to use - I had thought CE3 was pretty good but Backlight is just so much easier to work with. Thank you very much guys for a great product, and excellent customer support for those odd moments when one needs a helping hand or a prod in the right direction.
Looking forward to seeing what is in the pipeline!
Mike
Thanks Rod,
That's worked perfectly.
Mike
Yes, the post titles on the main blog page, and also the individual posts.
The advantage of child themes would seem to be that you could do other things too. I was seeing the blog titles as a simple starting point for further adventures!
Mike
I am looking for a way to change the blog title font colour and size. There are WP plugins that are supposed to enable this. There is "Title Color" that provides a colour picker in the post edit screen - this works for the full post title but not the truncated list of posts on the blog page. It has to be implemented post by post and so is not much good if you want to change old posts to a new format.
Then there is "Simple Custom CSS" that provides a css you can edit from within WP and is supposed to complement your selected WP theme which in my case is the Backlight Theme. When installed you get access to this via Appearance>>Custom CSS which give the WP css file to edit. I guess this is a child theme?
I tried
.entry-title a {
font-size:20px;
}
in the Simple Custom CSS generated css, but it didn't work. I varied the font size but no observable difference.
So - should "Simple Custom CSS" work in principle in harmony with Backlight but I just messed up somewhere? Or am I barking up the wrong tree entirely and should I do this using the normal BL custom css? Or is there some other way? Do child themes work with BL WP theme?
I am a bit of a novice at this and am blundering around in a field I know 'not alot' about - good way to learn, though!
Thanks for any help,
Mike
Hi Matt and Rod,
After a night off, I loaded up Firefox which had finished yesterday being good only to find it had reverted to blue, same as Chrome. Neither showed good on refresh or browser cache clear.
I have implemented the code in custom css that Rod shows above, and it all seems good now. Chrome and Firefox.
I can only guess that it is something server side otherwise why would the random switching between breadcrumb colour schemes affect my desktop, ipad (and phone) across two operating systems and three browsers, plus Rod's odd experience too on two more browsers - Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Safari, Opera.
Anyway, the custom css seems to have fixed the symptoms but obviously not the root cause. I give up at this point!
Thanks for your help and Rod, for the css code. As always, your rapid responses are much appreciated. Keep up the good work!!
Mike
So I have tried again on the ipad and after refreshing I have Safari good but Chrome reverting to blue.
On the desktop Firefox is still good but Chrome is blue!
What next?
I guess I could try the custom css and see what happens - it would be a work around if it solved the problem. That will be a job for tomorrow - its late here.
Mike
That's exactly as it should be, and yes I did clear both desktop browser caches (firefox and chrome) and the template cache more than once. The fact that it showed up blue on my ipad which I had not until then used to look at the website was a puzzle too.
But what is now an even bigger puzzle is that I have just gone back into Firefox (the same screen being open all this time) and have refreshed the page and the blue has gone to the yellow colour. Looks like you kick started it into submission!!
But Chrome resolutely refuses to show it correctly on my desktop despite yet another clear of the browser cache.
So I have just been and had another look on my ipad. In Chrome it is now correct. So I looked on Safari which I never normally use and it is wrong there.
So is there a behaviour that can explain this? It seems as if the problem derives from the server - the Safari response is the clincher for me in that respect, and the page is being served inconsistently - witness you see it correctly, and I do in Firefox.
Time for a cup of tea!
Thanks again
Mike
Hi,
Yes, I have changed the hyperlink colors in the Main Column control area of the page template.
This gallery set is an example http://picsbymike.co.uk/galleries/ttg-005-city/ which shows up as Galleries in blue and Cities of the world in white.
Thanks for your help,
Mike
I have checked the files on the server in the custom thumbnails gallery and they are there, but......
I think the file name structure may be the problem. It is like this 2015-02-12-22.54.02 ZS PMax-Edit.tif and when changed to this 2015-02-12-22_54_02 ZS PMax-Edit.tif it all works perfectly and I see my 33 files. The file names with the dots rather than underscores work fine in their respective galleries so perhaps it is something to do with the LR end of the pipeline in Publisher not recognising them.
Mike
I have the up and down arrows but only the 30 custom thumbnail files. It shows the same way in all 33 galleries. I have republished the three missing images and that has not resulted in their addition to the list.
Mike
Hi Rod,
The same colour as the other hyperlinks is what I am looking for. I have changed those and all the other hyperlinks are fine. I have cleared the template cache and cleared the browser caches on the two different browsers that I am checking things on. The same effect is visible on both whereby the breadcrumbs seem to be retaining the blue default colour.
I also checked on an ipad and it was the same.
Mike
Where do I change the colour of the bread crumbs from blue/white to the prevailing colour scheme? Have looked everywhere but cannot see how.
Thanks again for the answers.
Mike
Hi,
I have followed Matt's post on how to create custom thumbnails which has worked perfectly except that in the LR Publisher menu
Edit Album>Base Settings>Cover Image> window I only see 30 file names for custom thumbnails - I uploaded 33. Is there a limit somewhere? I have looked but cannot see it. This leaves me with three galleries not covered this way.
Thanks,
Mike
Thanks Rod for being so patient! That's done the trick.
Mike
OK - I was being stupid - assigning widgets all over again to rebuild the page seems to be working. Don't know why I never tried that!
Thanks for the prompt, and thanks again for replying so quickly - you guys really do give a lot of help and it is much appreciated.
Mike
Hi Rod
Thanks for getting back to me.
Within WP for my original theme I had assigned widgets, pages and various other things to the right hand column. The fact that they showed up in the live preview led me to believe that they would be carried over to the new theme as all that stuff lives in WP. I did not reassign or rebuild the widget area after switching to the BL theme. Should I have done that?
In any case, shouldn't the admin log-in appear there automatically - I don't remember how it got there - it was three years or so ago that I built the original blog page and those memory cells have long died off!
Mike
I have migrated my site to Backlight and activated the Backlight TTG Theme in WP. When I checked the live preview it showed both the main copy area and Tray 01 exactly as I would have liked, with the widgets, tags and all those kinds of things down the right hand side. At this point I was very very happy!!
So I accepted and saved this. However when I looked in the normal web view of my blog page the right hand tray 01 was blank. The main copy area containing the blogs was there, with the correct menu bar, but no widgets. Very odd?
Since everything was fine in live preview I assumed that something went wrong somewhere in the saving process so I went back to the old theme and saved that - it was as it should have been, then I went back to the new theme and this time live preview had tray01 blank.
I saved that as the old theme just led to a dead end as far as the menus were concerned, which with the benefit of hindsight was not a good idea! So now I have a theme which has all the right menus and look, but no right column with widgets. And of course admin log-in is no longer visible which did not cross my mind at the time.
What do you think I need to do to fix this? Thanks for any help. I have also got to work out how to log in!
Otherwise I am really happy with Backlight. It's so easy to make changes, super responsive and a dream to use.
Mike
Hi Ben, I have checked again the template settings and re-saved the set-up and that seems to have done the trick. I didn't actually have to change anything, but it works now so that is the main thing. I am puzzled as to what I have done to fix it. I guess it will remain a mystery! Thanks for your time and help.
Mike
I have just installed backlight + pages into a subfolder as a test site following the instructions and video. Backlight setup went very smoothly. Have installed publisher into LR and published first album but when I go to look at the album in my browser I get this message:
Something went wrong Unable to find pageTemplate with ID 77. Try updating the selected template for the application. in EngineFactory.php on line 70
Can you point me in the right direction to deal with this please.
Thanks,
Mike
