All three of my sites crash during Publisher Upload

When uploading to Publisher I get the following message:

Can't update this collection
Error uploading rendition
Headers { [error] => {[error code] =>
"bad ServerResponse" [name] => "The
server returned an invalid or unrecognized response"
[native code]=> 12152

When this happens all the galleries (Backlight and CE4) on my site become unresponsive and it takes several minutes for them to recover.  Once they recover I can recommence the upload and the cycle will repeat about every 20 or 30 images.  I saw this previously on a different site and assumed I had done something in a template that was causing the issue.  Today with a fresh installation of Backlight on a different site and using the default templates I get the same results.  Host for both is the notorious GoDaddy. Since my CE4 galleries use php I wonder if it is php that is locking up.  I am able to get the galleries uploaded and working properly, but it is a bit of an adventure.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Re: All three of my sites crash during Publisher Upload

Just noticed that this issue crashes all three of my sites on GoDaddy simultaneously even though I am uploading to one only.  Updating galleries from CE4 to Backlight is becoming a real challenge sad

Re: All three of my sites crash during Publisher Upload

I am updating my GoDaddy hosting from the old outdated Deluxe plan to the current Deluxe plan which is one step down from the cPanel hosting plan.  That will get me access to more recent php versions although apparently the 5.2.17 version I was on was sufficient for Backlight.  I will see if the hosting update fixes the upload problem.  I was told to wait 24 hours before trying. GoDaddy will upgrade me to the cPanel plan at essentially no cost. But I don't know if that will resolve my upload issue.

After reading bob chadwick's thread I agree that the problem seems to be at GoDaddy's end.  If the hosting plan upgrade does not fix the issue I would appreciate some input on what to try next with GoDaddy.  Changing hosting providers is not really an option for me.  I recognize that GoDaddy is a bad word on the support fourm.  But it has been fine with CE3 and CE4.  I had no reason to expect anything different with Backlight.

Re: All three of my sites crash during Publisher Upload

I had the same issue using Publisher in CE4.  Updating PHP solved a lot of my problems but not the issue of not being able to continuously add/update the images.  I'm assuming that all three of your sites are at the same location on GoDaddy so I'm not surprised that overwhelming their server with uploads to one, takes down all of your sites.

Re: All three of my sites crash during Publisher Upload

Sometimes those upload issues are due to upload limit settings in the php.ini file.

search on "upload" and look for this section:

; Maximum allowed size for uploaded files.
; http://php.net/upload-max-filesize
upload_max_filesize = 64M

; Maximum number of files that can be uploaded via a single request
max_file_uploads = 20

the php.ini file should be in the root of your site. If it isn't there, you may need to create one from your host's C-panel.

Thanks Rod.  I'll look tonight.  Any limits on the max number of files?

Thanks Rod.  According to phpinfo.php I have a 20 file limit, which seems to match what I am experiencing.  It doesn't appear that my plan will allow me to edit php.ini, so I'll contact GoDaddy.  They are offereing to move me to their cPannel service at no cost.  Is that worth doing?

Thanks,
Luke

Re: All three of my sites crash during Publisher Upload

if you have a php.ini file in the root of your site you can download it and edit it with a text editor. Then upload the changed file.
Make sure you set the file size big enough too.

My site does not have a php.ini file.  GoDaddy support told me to create one with a text editor making the changes to the appropriate variables.  This is what I created and uploaded as php.ini to the root directory.  I was told these setting would override the server php defaults.  Not working since phpinfo.php shows the old settings.  I did update to php 5.3.

file_uploads = On
post_max_size = 100M
max_file_uploads 100
upload_max_filesize = 50M

Moving to the cPannel service seemed to be the solution for many GoDaddy customers. You should find several references in the forum.

Re: All three of my sites crash during Publisher Upload

I have a PHP5.ini file with the following entries.

max_execution_time =  300
memory_limit = 128M

Is this the same thing?

Re: All three of my sites crash during Publisher Upload

I don't think so, but I'm no expert. In my php.ini file, memory_limit has to do with amount of memory a script may consume.
You might try a Google search or wait to see if Matt or Ben can shed any more light on your problem.

Re: All three of my sites crash during Publisher Upload

A Google search suggests that the PHP.INI file relates to cPanel while the PHP5.INI file is for all other web hosting at Godaddy.
