Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

Hi,

I can't access my site--johnblaustein.com.  I get an error: 500 Internal Server Error.  Same happens when trying:
http://www.johnblaustein.com/backlight/admin/

I contacted my webhost and they said there is a problem with the index.php file.

I don't know what do to.  Can you help?  I have a backup of the custom and data folders from right before I upgraded to BL3.

Thank you.

John

Re: Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

have you tried uploading the index.php file again?
it’s the one in the root of the unzipped Backlight-3-Installer folder. It needs to go in the root of your site.
the .htaccess file in the same location also needs to be in the root of the site

Re: Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

Hi Rod,

Thank you for the quick/instant reply.

No, I have not tried uploading the index.php file from the Backlight-3-Installer.  Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but can you please tell me where to download the Backlight-3-Installer?

I do know how to upload files with FileZilla, so I'll do that when I get the installer.

Re: Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

when you purchased a Backlight 3 you received a link to download the installer zip file. so it may be on your computer already.
Or you can find your order from the link on this page: http://theturninggate.net/support/
It may have got the exact name of the folder wrong, I’m going from memory.

Re: Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

Rod,

I downloaded and unzipped the installer.  I copied index.php and .htaccess into the root directory of my site, replacing the two files that were there previously.  Unfortunately, I am still getting the 500 Internal Server Error.

Is there anything else related to Backlight 3 that I can try?  Or is this now something I need to pursue further with my web host?  (I should note that BL3 worked just fine when I updated in early June.  This problem just began in the past couple of days.)

Re: Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

Try running the Backlight Installer again by going to the installer on your site: http://www.johnblaustein.com/backlight/installer/

If that doesn't resolve things, the Ben will need to take a look. He will likely need Backlight admin and FTP credentials.

Re: Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

I will run the BL installer again.  The link you sent shows BL2, but I assume that's OK.

In the meantime, I have created a support ticket with my hosting service and they are looking into it.  If I get nowhere with them, I will send Ben my login info.

Thank you again.

Re: Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

the link I sent was from your site. If you had BL2 installed and haven't updated to BL3, I suppose it would show Backlight 2. Either that or that detail didn't get changed with BL3

Re: Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

I upgraded to BL3 in early June.  It's been working fine until a day or so ago.

I am concerned about reinstalling since it may overwrite the /custom and /data folders.  (I made a backup just now.)

I'll see what the host support says and contact Ben if needed.

Re: Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

It shouldn't overwrite those two folders, but you can always back them up to your computer and upload them after any re-installation if needed.

or just wait for Ben.

PS, it looks like the "Install Backlight 2" heading at the /backlight/installer/ page is normal if you've updated or are updating a site from BL2. I get the same thing on my site.

Re: Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

I went to http://www.johnblaustein.com/backlight/installer/ and reinstalled BL.  The page said the installation was successful.

I then clicked the link on the install page to go to http://www.johnblaustein.com/backlight/.  I still get the 500 Error.

http://www.johnblaustein.com/backlight/admin returns the same 500 Error.

Others here have had issues that revolved around which version of PHP the server is using.  Can you tell me which version BL needs and I will check it is available?  Of course, my problem may have nothing to do with PHP version.

I am waiting to hear from my web host support and/or from Ben.

Re: Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

My server is running PHP 7.2 (ea-php72).

The other choices are:
PHP 7.3 (ea-php73)
inherit

Perhaps BL3 need PHP 7.3???

I hate making changes without someone who understands this stuff tells me to, so I will await further advice.

Thank you.

Re: Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

Hi John, Backlight 3 should work on PHP 5.6 through 7.4, so 7.2 and 7.3 should be fine.

Unfortunately, 500 errors don't provide information on what's gone wrong.  Can you provide me with FTP access via email so that I can look into this?

Re: Website down -- 500 Internal Server Error

Thank you, Ben, for your help via email.

For the benefit of others, I thought I should add that my problem--still not solved as of today--is not related to Backlight.  It's a problem with a server maintenance upgrade that my hosting service is trying to resolve.
