I am getting an error trying to authenticate the connection and API key. It shows the path that is in the documentation, but there is no publisher directory on the server.
Also, should I see the modules in the modules folder on the server?

make sure the first part of the API url exactly matches you site url you’ve set in Backlight Settings Site URL
if the url there starts with https, so must the API URL in Lightroom
the url ending in backlight/publisher is correct. you won’t see a publisher folder on the server, it’s all done by some sort of Ben magic.
as to the modules, I believe you should see them in the modules folder. Are you missing anything?

I had made an error that was fixed by making sure that both keys were the same—they weren't.
None of these is in the modules folder on the server.
I remember there were several there before I moved the old version to a folder to hide it. Screenshot of the old version:

In spite of what seems to be missing, I was able to publish a simple test album.

I don’t see anything missing.
Don’t expect to find a /backlight/publisher/ folder. It doesn’t exist, despite the fact that you need that url to publish anything.
