Upgrading sites

I am at the start of an upgrade/redesign cycle for two sites:
http://marccharlebois.com/ witch is CE3 and http://www.nathaliemoliavko-visotzky.com/ witch should be Backlight 2 but in the TEMPLATES section I see that OKAPI is listed as the module type.

I know, the CE3 site cannot be upgraded and will have to be re-built from the ground up.

But about that other one showing OKAPI type modules. Should it be updated? It indicates 2.0.14 as the version installed.

Re: Upgrading sites

Okapi page, standard album and album set templates are available to BL 2.
But if you want to update the templates to Pangolin, you’ll have to redesign, as usual.

Re: Upgrading sites

From what Matt has told me, Backlight 3 is still Pangolin-based so I don’t think redesign will be necessary.

Re: Upgrading sites

Seems I need a kick start here...
Redesigning this old CE3 site. Installed the Backlight, Galleries, index.php and the .htaccess folders/files. I actually copied the .htaccess file from my main site. Could this be a problem?

I started designing the main PAGE (background colour, Montserrat typeface and navigation in the top pallet but nothing shows up.
What did I miss?

Re: Upgrading sites

Is the old site’s home page still there? Possibly an index.html page?

Re: Upgrading sites

No, I'm building this from scratch, so the only home page should be the Backlight Pangolin page with some edits on it. Now I only see the basic home page.

Re: Upgrading sites

Did you assign the correct template to the home page?

Re: Upgrading sites

Yes. I started the design on a page template and named it
PAGES - marco and assigned it as the default template.

Re: Upgrading sites

well, right now, the page template being used is template-id-1. Just because you assigned your new template as the default doesn't mean it will automatically be assigned to existing pages. What page template your home page and other pages using?

Re: Upgrading sites

You are right: I did need to assign the template in the PAGES section. Thanks for the...well, you know.

Re: Upgrading sites

By the way, I suppose that the CSS I was using on the CE3 pages does not apply with the Backlight built pages...

Re: Upgrading sites

Yet another glitch: when refreshing the page pideja.ca/marco  for the blink of a moment, I see the SITE TITLE on the left of where the image-masthead displays...

Looking all over for that setting.

UPDATE!

I only see this glitch in Firefox

Re: Upgrading sites

Got rid of that pesky glitch by putting the SITE TITLE in black! Still can see that very fine, not-quite-black border around the image that serves as a Masthead-nameplate.

Also, is it possible that some settings, like margin or padding, are not quite the same in different browsers like Chrome and Firefox?

Re: Upgrading sites

margin and padding should be the same from browser to browser.
You might be seeing that masthead glitch due to image load time.

Re: Upgrading sites

Thanks, Rod

I'll be starting a new topic - Galleries & Videos to continue the rebuild of this site.

As Rod said, Backlight 3 also uses Pangolin and will be a seamless upgrade from Backlight 2.  I suggest you re-read Matt's newsletter where he discusses a number of points.
