eliminate breadcrumbs
Is it possible to eliminate the breadcrumbs? My site is very simple, and they are distracting

yep. you can disable them in the albums and album sets. Look under the Features Tab.
And in your top level gallery, from Backlight, go to Publisher and click on the name of the top level gallery. Click Edit Properties.
