Slow downloads and heavy siteloads

Hi

Im using the latest version of Backlight 2 on a website called www.sverigesnationalparker.nu and have a problem with the loading times on the site. I've been in contact with my ISP (the ones hosting) and they can't find anything wrong with the sites. I get the same results on multiple computers with various OS (mac and pc) and what happens is that it sometimes is loading for ever, almost to the point where the site is un-responsive and it takes for ever to upload/download/edit/browse and use the site.
The site is not very heavy on graphics and consists mainly of text and small .jpgs that I try to keep small, might be to big for super fast downloads but should not in any way cause these delays.

Is there anything in the code from backlight and TTG that could cause this that I could look into before I curse at my provider (joke).
I want to be sure its not me and "my code" that causes this!

Thanks in advance! And thanks to everyone involved in making TTG so great! /Daniel

Re: Slow downloads and heavy siteloads

Daniel - what file size and format are your images?  Only time I had this problem was using too large an image file and it dragged down the download.

Re: Slow downloads and heavy siteloads

Well most of the files are less than 1200px jpg, and normally save them with compression 9 in PS or similar in Lightroom. So the images should not be the issue. Even pages without images are slow to download. Sometimes its not really like it feels like it slow with downloading due to size more to some other kind of issue, like it does "get stuck" for a while, hard to describe but loading a page with one or two images over a 200mbit LAN should not take 45-50sek... and then it should load the webpage and leave the image out I would guess!

Re: Slow downloads and heavy siteloads

What about the size of the background image you use for the masthead?  I looked at your site and it really does load slow - but I also noticed the background image is eventually the first to load and then it speeds up from there.  My first attempt on my site was similar until I discovered that background image was up over 20 mb.  Once I scaled it back to 1 mb or less, along with the size of all of my images, it straightened out.

Re: Slow downloads and heavy siteloads

I do think that the BG image is quite small but its a good advice! I'll take a look at it! What annoys me is that it does load really quick on some ocations and sometimes it doesnt even seem to load the site at all (like nothing). But I guess if the size of the BG would be too big it could sometimes be loaded from the cache. I'll look into it!

Re: Slow downloads and heavy siteloads

you might try turning off the background image just to see if that helps.

Re: Slow downloads and heavy siteloads

I do wish the suggestion you made tgalex was the explaination but thats not the case my masthead is less than 300kb and the text (as a png on top) is around 40kb. All my design images that is loaded on regular basis is all way less than 1mb.

Re: Slow downloads and heavy siteloads

Anyone who cares to look into this report and try to understand whats going wrong! I've updated the background image but it still seems to be the issue there! 33.06sek to load an image that is just south of 140kb.
Is this caused by something in Backlight2 or is this an issue for the web provider? They can't find anything in their end after quite careful investigation.
Around 35sek to load the first page is enough to scare visitors away for sure! sad

Re: Slow downloads and heavy siteloads

Since this seems very slow for a Backlight site, my guess it’s your host.
Ben would probably be able to figure it ou.
I’d suggest emailing him and include Backlight admin credentials. He may also need ftp access.

Re: Slow downloads and heavy siteloads

This looks to be a performance issue with your host.  Backlight does a lot of work for each page load, but that work should be done in 1/10th of a second or so.  A host with poor performance could blow that out to seconds, as you're seeing.  It also looks like the various requests are slowing it down further.  A single request in isolation may take a few seconds on your host, but when combined with half a dozen requests at the same time, that's blowing out to 30-90 seconds.

Here is the link to all the results from the performance report. Ben should I email you the login-settings to have you take a look?

Re: Slow downloads and heavy siteloads

Who is your host ? I'm using backlight with one.com in Sweden, and find it a bit slow, though not as bad as yours. Back in CE4 days, my site was blindingly fast, but the extra overheads in Backlight seems to be a pushing one.com. I'd like to have bigger images, but have to keep them small for a reasonable response time.

Re: Slow downloads and heavy siteloads

Hi, I'm using Binero here in Sweden. Havn't had any issues until setting up this site. The wierd thing is that most of the time it goes slow but then on occations its superfast. And the image in the Mast head is less then 200kb now after updating the old one and still that seems to be the thing that causes this problem. I could maybe add 1 or 2 extra seconds for loading that over a slow connection but more than 30sec is wierd.
