Sorry for the trouble caused by the host server. I will try to update Backlight 1, as suggested but would it be better
To upgrade to Backlight 2?
I already tried twice but failed...probably something I miss along the way. Will upgrading change the formatting and force me to redesign?

If you’re using Pangolin modules in Backlight 1, then no.
And you can also install the base Okapi modules in Backlight 2. This will allow you to use existing Okapi standard album templates and album set templates

Ben,
I think I'll try to upgrade the site to Backlight 2. However, I think I'll try it thru MAMP so I can "fail" privately.
Should I go about doing this in the usual manner? Anything pârticular I should know about upgrading thru MAMP?
Problem is I still can't log into the Backlight page. Think the upgrade might fix this?

Everything should work fine in MAMP. Backlight 1 and 2 were both developed with MAMP. If you encounter any issues please let us know.

Will do!

I have started the procedure to upgrade to Backlight 2 within MAMP. Installed Backlight 2. After install, I get here (localhost:8888/backlight), with this curious formatting:
Notice the URL. If I try http://localhost:8888/backlight/, I get:
What am I doing wrong?
Also, the way the site is structured, there is a "portal" at http://www.nathaliemoliavko-visotzky.com and the two sections Fr and En. In these, there is no "custom" folder. Just the Backlight. And there are the images, galleries, pdf-files and videosrc folders containing the media (videos, pdf and images).
Should I upgrade these two sections also?

The first thing to do is change the name of the site directory. "backlight" is a special name that's used to work out paths. Naming the actual site as that can trip things up.

If they are separate sites, then yes.

Ben,
I did not name the directory Backlight. I installed the Backlight 2 files and during the installation process, the url became localhost:8888/backlight/backlight!
- If I type in http://localhost:8888/backlight/backlight/installer/, I get to the start of the installation process.
- I log in to the installation and the installation process is ready to begin http://localhost:8888/backlight/backlight/installer/.
- I install Backlight 2 with success.
- When I attempt to continue, I get a strangely formatted login page. I put in the credentials (admin/ttg8888) and reach a similarly ill-formatted page which is the setup page http://localhost:8888/backlight/backlight/admin/setup/
Trying to login to the localhost this morning only results in an HTTP ERROR 500. So, no dice.
Not too sure what to do. Maybe start all over again, but I don't know where the mistake is...

What does the folder structure look like?

For the MAMP : htdocs>sites>nathaliemoliavko-visotzky (within that last folder is the index.php file).

I'm wondering why, then, the path to the installer isn't: http://localhost:8888/nathaliemoliavko-visotzky/backlight/installer/

You can define the root directory for your server to be ..../sites/nathaliemoliavkovisotzky. Then you get to this directory with http://localhost:8888.
Pierre, it seems like you have installed the backlight files in a directory called backlight. The easiest is to change the MAMP server (Preferences > Web Server > Document Root) to point the root directory like ..../sites/nathaliemoliavkovisotzky/backlight.

Can you copy and paste the contents of the MAMP config for the virtual host entry for this site.
Also, can you open a terminal, change to the directory that is specified in the DocumentRoot setting For your virtual host, run the following commands and paste the output here:
pwd ; find . -maxdepth 2 -type d
Something else to check is that the correct index.php and .htaccess files are at the top of the site and in the backlight directory respectively.

As above, 'backlight' should not be used as the directory name of the site itself.

I'm back for good, this time....today, opening MAMP and trying to login to the site. I get a 500 error.
So, I'm starting over.
Replaced the faulty folder with another one pulled from the archives.
Test with MAMP and it works. URL is: http://localhost:8888//
Now, upgrade to BACKLIGHT 2...

Right after replacing the index.php and the htaccess files, the backlight folder, I log into the site and get the initial installation page where I must enter my order number and email. http://localhost:8888/backlight/installer/;
I then enter the credentials; install Backlight 2 and get to the login page...I enter the standard initial login info and I'm in.
I successfully created a new API, Administrative password and completed the initial setup.
Since there are a French and an English side to this site, should I update these sections as well?

Login to the upgraded site, I am surprised to see that all formatting is gone! It's like I was creating a new site. What went wrong?

Realized that I had deleted or replaced the DATA and CUSTOM folders within the BACKLIGHT folder. Re-did the upgrade carefully.
Kept the original BACKLIGHT/DATA & BACKLIGHT/CUSTOM folders. Everything else comes from the Backlight 2 installation folder.
So, I now have, within the BACKLIGHT folder:
CUSTOM, DATA, INSTALLER and MODULES folders plus the INDEX.PHP, .htaccess and env.php.skel files.
Now, I'm back with the HTTP ERROR 500!

For you, Pierre, and please don't take this personally, I would recommend to do your work on the web in a subdomain or a subdirectory so others can have a look. When you encounter issues in a MAMP/WAMP setting, it is very difficult to help.

I understand that I'm not ready for MAMP just yet.
So, I'm trying an upgrade of the online site.
Replaced the BACKLIGHT folder content with the BACKLIGHT 2 content except for the DATA and CUSTOM that I retained from the original installation.
Still getting HTTP ERROR 500

did you also upload the index.php and .htaccess files from the root of the unzipped Backlight-2-Installer-107 folder?

Yes sir.
I can log into the BACKLIGHT installation and settings pages but not the site itself.

I will try to re-install.
If this helps, the server's error log writes:
[05-Aug-2019 18:19:08 UTC] PHP Warning: require_once(./backlight/framework/Framework.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/marcc6/public_html/nathaliemoliavko-visotzky/index.php on line 17
