Having set up the main site on peterblandford.com , I am trying to do the WordPress blog next, when I create a Theme and save it I get the error "Unable to save settings. Error 418."
any ideas?

Have you installed WordPress into its own folder?
In Backlight Settings have you filled out the WordPress section?

Sorry Rod I don't know what you mean by installing Wordpress into its own folder, I installed backlight and the WP-Theme is in the modules but I didn't install it individually
I did fill out the setting is the wordpress section

If you've already installed WordPress on your site (that is, you already have a WordPress blog), then never mind. Just make sure you have the URL to the WordPress installation entered into Backlight.

When I try to export the theme I get the error
The theme could not be exported.
The directory ../wp-content/themes does not exist. Please check your setting for Wordpress URL under Backlight Settings.

I think I may be misunderstanding how Backlight works with WordPress, I thought I could export the theme from Backlight and apply it by logging into my WordPress page which is currently up and running (http://www.blog.peterblandford.com/) and activating the new theme.

looks like the URL settings are correct.
You have Export on Save set to NO so have you tried exporting the theme to WordPress manually from Backlight?

Yes, I think so , here are the steps I followed,
In BL2 templates - create new theme template - applied a page template and save
from View Template - I click on Export Theme to Wordpress and I get this error
The theme could not be exported.
The directory ../wp-content/themes does not exist. Please check your setting for Wordpress URL under Backlight Settings.

if my last suggestion doesn't work, try /blog/. I'm assuming your subdomain is in a folder named "blog" in the root of your site?
I thought it would need the whole url but perhaps it just needs a path?
If that doesn't work, then since you're blog is in a sub-domain, you'll probably need to install Backlight in that subdomain as well.
You can then export the template from your main site and import it into the blog site and use it as the basis for your theme.

I just ran a test by creating a subdomain and installing WordPress. Then tried to export the theme to the new installation from my Backlight test site. Doesn't work.
It looks like you're going to need to install Backlight in your blog subdomain.

A workaround would be to create the wp-content/themes directory where Backlight is expecting it, and then after exporting the theme from Backlight, manually copying the saved files into the equivalent location of your blog

Also, see that the info icon on the WordPress URL allows for a relative path. If both your blog and Backlight are on the same server then using this approach should work.
For example if your server had the following directories:
yoursite.com
blog.yoursite.com
Then a setting of ../blog.yoursite.com should work.

My hosting company say it should be pretty easy to move the site within my domain, so I may go for that option

So I decided an easier option was to move my blog within my host so that it sat as a subdirectory of the main Backlight site. With Krystal's help I followed the following steps
1. logged into the old blog location and changed the url to be the new location within wordpress
2. downloaded the whole blog directory with FTP
3. Uploaded it all to the new location, overwriting the blank wordpress install that Backlight created
4. Logged into the blog in the new location and set the theme to be the Backlight one
It all looks pretty good, apart from the fact that when I click on a blog post, rather than displaying it, I get the slideshow from the home page, even though the URL on the browser looks correct
Any ideas?

Just my 2 cents:
Note that you would need to update all url references in the WP mysql database after moving it, apart of some config file changes. You should then add some 301 redirects from your subdomain to you main domain as well so that all your existing links to your blog continue to work.
You are not the first one doing this, so Google finds many answers to the steps needed.

You could be right as I am having some issues (see above)
I host with Krystal and I moved to them from powweb which was a fairly tricky, but they suggested that because the database was going from one location at Krystal to another it would be fine.

I already had the theme in the new directory so I downloaded it and put it in the new one and it works fine. I just need to remember to repeat the process if and when I make changes.
