- is it possible to let people upload their images into a backlight album (or WP page) without login to backlights backend?
- and is it possible to add captions via upload through Backlight?

One must be logged in to Backlight to upload images.
Images uploaded via Backlight Publisher need to have metadata already embedded, if you need to add metadata you’ll need to reprocess them to add metadata and upload again. You’ll probably need to delete originals.
Or perhaps you could edit the database entries for any images needing metadata updating.
