I am starting with Backlight for the first time. What is API? It say's "The API Key, you will have set on the Quick Settings page when installing Backlight, above." But I don't know what it relates too!

The API key allows the Publisher plugin to communicate with the server side of Publisher.
I think it can be just about anything you want. Enter it in Publisher Settings in Backlight as well as the Settings in the TTG Publisher plugin in Lightroom.

I have tried two passwords that I set up. One from my Account with Backlight and the other from my Backlight login page kewphoto.com/backlight/admin and neither of them work.
I keep receiving a message "Authentication Check, The authentication check was NOT successful. Please check the URL and API Key"
My URL is what? www.kewphoto.com or http://kewphoto.com/backlight/publisher/ as explained in Instal Publisher Part 1.
I have tried to login to http//:kewphoto.com/backlight/admin on another computer and it does not recognise my username or password!
This is getting very frustrating. How many accounts, passwords and usernames are there. It is getting very confusing and there is no simple explanation.
I am a photographer not a web designer.

In the TTG Publisher Lightroom plug-in, directly above where you entered the API key, is the API URL field. You need to enter the url to /backlight/publisher/ in that field.
From the docs:
Within the Publish Services panel, you should see an entry for TTG Publisher. Double-click the entry, or right-click and select “Edit Settings…”
1. The API URL will be http://yourdomain.com/backlight/publisher.
2. The API Key, you will have set on the Quick Settings page when installing Backlight, above.
3. Click “Save”.

I know the home page is there. But that is the Backlight basic one. I need to have the old one back that I had before purchasing Backlight which had links and photos on it for the clients to navigate. For now I still need to resolve the problem with the Lightroom TTG Publisher Plugin! All the answers you have given me do not create a solution!

If you uploaded the index.php file from Backlight + Pages into the root of your site, it overwrote what you originally had there. You'll need to re-upload your original home page.
Did you change the API URL to match that of your website? To include the www?
What sort of set up are you looking for. Earlier you mentioned your clients being able to navigate to your two official websites. Are these the sites where you want to use Backlight?

The API key is like a password but it doesn't have anything to do with your Backlight passwords. Just make something up: avkjla^669 for example. It doesn't matter.
What does matter is that you put the same API key in the designated fields in both Backlight (Backlight > Publisher > Settings > Other > API Key) and Publisher in Lightroom.

It doesn't matter from what computer you login to Backlight. If you don't remember your username and/or password, see this:

your site url is http://www.kewphoto.com. Your API url should be http://www.kewphoto.com/backlight/publisher/ just as outlined in the docs.

The home page you're seeing right now at your site is from the Backlight-Pages index.php file.
If you go here: http://www.kewphoto.com/index.html you'll see your original home page.
The index.php file is taking precedence. Simply delete it from the server and your original page will show.

Make up an API key. It can be any string of characters as far as I know, but for now, just for testing, keep it simple.
Enter this string of characters in Backlight > Publisher > Settings > Other > API Key
In Lightroom, in the Publisher Services Control pane, double click on TTG Publisher
Under Publisher API Details, enter the API URL: http://www.kewphoto.com/backlight/publisher/
Enter the API Key you created in the API Key field.
Click Check Authentication.
To actually publish to the site you'll need to designate a Top-level galleries directory that corresponds to the folder name on your site. If you uploaded the galleries/ folder from the Backlight download to the root of your site, use galleries.
If you want to email your API key to me, I'll check on my end and see if I can connect as well.

I am still having problems with my set up and passwords. I use a Mac with the OS system, with Keychain so whenever a username and password is created it is saved. I currently have a username and password saved which allows me to login to the Backlight Dashboard.
But I do not remember the username and passwords for the other areas.
Nor do I remember my initial username and password for the Quick Settings page so I am still not able to complete the installation of the Publisher Plugin with Lightroom because it says The Authentication was NOT successful and I need to check my URL & API Key. I have tried my URL http://kewphoto.com/backlight/publisher and the password that allows me to enter the Backlight Dashboard but I still get the same message.

There is no special password. Just log into Backlight.

As mentioned above, the API Key has nothing to do with your Backlight dashboard password.
Just make something up for your API key and enter it in Backlight under Publisher > Settings > Other > API Key
And then enter the exact same thing in the Publisher plug-in in Lightroom.

The two have nothing to do with each other. Your login to this forum is specific to this forum and, unless you set up the exact same username and password for your Backlight login, won't help you login to Backlight on your server.

This is like any forum on the web. You need a username and password. If you close this forum page, it doesn't affect your Backlight installation.
The only other username and password you need is for your Backlight installation.
The Publisher API Key is not related to either.

Your API url should be in the same format as your site url. If your site url starts with http://www. then so should your API url.

Backlight runs on your site, and doesn't connect here. Your forum username/password is entirely separate from your website.
So here, you need exactly ONE login.
For your website, you make as many logins as you need. I make due with just the admin user.
The API key used by publisher is, as has been exhaustively explained by now, ARBITRARY and can be changed at any time. The only requirement is that you use the same key both in Backlight's admin and in the Publish Services plugins, as this allows the two things to communicate.
