I should know but I've have fumbled around for a while so here is the issue:
the images are 1366px x 816px. I'm trying to build an online (sort of) slideshow based on a pdf document that is 14" x 8,5".
The Pangolin Theater module is set up like so:
Presentation / Vegas Slide Show / Max width: 1366px / type: Inline / aspect ratio x (16) y (10)
I noticed that the aspect ration manages the image and what "cropping" could be applied. But, it's very frustrating trying to find the correct aspect ratio in order to see all the image on the page. Either the top and bottom sections are cut off or in more extreme aspect ratios, the image is cropped and blown up.
Evidently, I'm having a hard time figuring out the relationship between page size, image size, aspect ratio....
Can you help?

have you tried the different image scaling options? It's directly below the Aspect Ratio settings.
"Fit" should prevent cropping.

Consider this site: pideja.ca/danlev
For what I want it to do, it's ok save for the fact that it's a bit tall. What I mean is that viewing on my monitor (1920x1080) the bottom is cut off unless I scroll down a bit. The same when viewed on (1680x1050) worst on a (1280x1024) and on a (1366 x 768) monitor, it's cut by a third!
Why is this site not responsive? I realize these formats are different in aspect ratio, I get that. But neither includes all the page. Only the 1920x1080 comes close.
Should I play around with the Theater module's Presentation/aspect ratio or is my setup more fundamentally wrong?

UPDATE - sort of...
I turned OFF in PAGES/Top pallet/has height in Desktop (and Mobile);
I turned OFF MASTHEAD/Top pallet title/visible;
and I disabled MASTHEAD/Primary masthead.
Now I have a full-screen website in these viewports: 1008 x 806; 1280 x 1024; 1680 x 1050 and 1920 x 1080 and the site seems responsive.

Hard to tell what the problem may have been without seeing it. If you want your masthead showing too, can you post another album wi5h your original settings.

In fact, I detected a slight cropping still occurring on the site. On the image MALINA there are three images. The two on the left should have a white stroke on their left side and also on the bottom of the lower one. Granted these are almost at the border of the document but still, they are missing.
Might be in the way I prepare the images before going into Backlight. I build everything in InDesign (originally this was a printed portfolio)then I export each page in jpeg. These are then dropped into Lightroom and Publisher. That's when Backlight enters the project.
There might be some discrepancy between the InDesign spreads, the jpeg exported pages and the formatting in Backlight.
For now, it's no big deal but I want to get at the bottom of this.

I'm wondering if it's something in the Lightroom or InDesign processing. Is there any cropping going on. If you look at the picture itself, and not in the slideshow, the white strokes are still missing:

Since only one image displayed the "cropping", I went back to In Design and "sort of nudged it" a bit, about 2 or 3 pixels. Must have been to near the edge because now they show.
By the way, in the Large Image Presentation, if I put in a caption in Lightroom, it will show up if I indicate [Caption] in CAPTIONS.
But, wanting the file name to show, I put [Filename] in PHOTOS TITLE. Alas, no filename is displayed.

You must still be using an Okapi-based album template. In Image Settings > Image Metadata in regular albums (not Vegas albums as we've been discussing) the Photos Title field is for the image's html title attribute. Whatever token you add there, the metadata is added to the attribute of the image but does not appear on the page. Only metadata for tokens placed in the Photos Caption field will appear on the page. You can put as many tokens in that field as you like. You can also add your own text.
On that subject, that field was removed in Pangolin and is now found in the album template under Photo Presentation.
If you create an album template using a Pangolin page template, then you should only see the Caption field in Photo Presentation
Also, be sure you're using curly braces {Caption} not square brackets [Caption]

I have had the same issue of not being able to get it to scale correctly, and usually with vertical clipping. In CE4, there was a tool to see what the actual size looked like on the device. Any thoughts on making a similar tool available in BL?

On my version of Backlight, that is Album Settings/Image Settings/Image Metadata where there are Photos Caption and Photos Title. Unless I am not at the right place.
Photos Caption {Caption} will display whatever caption is in Lightroom for a particular image. Also, Photos Title {Title} will display the corresponding Title found in Lightroom. But as for the filename that I would like to append to the title, no luck up to now.
There is also the possibility that this is a pre-Pangolin flavour of Backlight. Should I update to the latest version? How?

In the page source for that page your stylesheet is 'okapi-core' which would indicate you are using an Okapi template.

Since Backlight is web based, the only place to look is in a browser on the web. Use developer tools found in your browser to simulate tablets and phones.

I believe you already have the new Pangolin version. I can see that in the source code of the slideshow you posted above.
In the album template you're referring to, you're looking at a pre-Pangolin album template. If you look at the page template, you'll see that it's an Okapi page template.
To create a Pangolin album template, first create a new page template. Under "type," choose "Pangolin page".
Then create a new album template and choose the new Pangolin page template you made as the Page Template.
You'll then have access to all the new Pangolin album features.
If you need to update anything, refer to the readme.txt files that come with the downloads.

If you'd like to see the width/height of the current play space, you can do that in Pangolin.
1. Log in to Backlight's admin.
2. Viewing an album or page, enable the autoRefresh feature (either by URL query, or by clicking the refresh icon in the footer).
3. Open your browser's developer tools to view the rendered page source; in Chrome, the "Elements" tab.
4. You will see 'data-width' and 'data-height' attributes applied to the HTML tag, reporting the current width and height of the viewport.

Thanks,
the auto refresh should do it
