?Same photo in multiple albums... What is stored, one image or multipl

I have some images that appear in more than one album.  LR only keeps the single image with pointers.  What happens in BackLight when these albums are published?
Is there an image per album, or is one image shared between multiple albums?

Just beware of Lightroom's virtual copies. Using them in albums seems to work poorly.
