Sub-domain problems

Hi All,

Ok, I have set-up a subdomain http://events.simonjameswilliams.co.uk which is pointing to www.simonjameswilliams.co.uk/galleries/events/ in my domain control panel.

Now, going to http://www.simonjameswilliams.co.uk/events/galleries/ works no problems, but using the subdomain events.simonjameswilliams.co.uk produces the page, but with no gallery picture. If you click on the (blank) gallery picture I then get a 404 error.

I have loads of screenshots, and have tried everything from the Lightroom plugin settings, to the Backlight module.

The Lightroom module is "Top level galleries directory [/events/galleries]"

So, in summary, I can get to the gallery using the full level http://www.simonjameswilliams.co.uk/events/galleries/, but not through a subdomain.

FTP settings are [/public_html/events] with [backlight]and[galleries] inside.

Any ideas?

P.S. I have re-installed EVERYTHING from domain names to the Lightroom plugin.

Your galleries link is pointing to http://events.simonjameswilliams.co.uk/ … galleries/ so I expect your site URL in backlight is pointing to the wrong place, it should be pointing at your subdomain.

Edit to add: your site URL should be http://events.simonjameswilliams.co.uk

Nope. Same problem - blank thumbnails with 404 errors when clicked.

Have you tried pointing your subdomain to http://www.simonjameswilliams.co.uk/events/galleries/?

You probably know more than I do; all I know is that your 'galleries' directory and 'backlight' directory need to be at the same level and directly off the 'root' of your domain or subdomain. Beyond that I'm out of ideas.

this has always worked for me:

In my host's C-Panel I create a sub-domain and give it a name. A folder by that name is created on the server.
So if I was creating an "events" domain, the url would look like this:
http://events.barbeephoto.com and on the server there would be a folder named events/ (barbeephoto.com/events)
Backlight would be installed in barbeephoto.com/events/

In backlight, the Site url would be http://events.barbeephoto.com
The Publisher API URL would be http://events.barbeephoto.com/backlight/publisher/

Pick one domain and configure Backlight and Publisher for that domain and that domain only. Backlight does a lot of work to calculate paths and needs everything to point to the same place.

If you must have it available at two locations, then I would suggest configuring Backlight at http://www.simonjameswilliams.co.uk/ and using your events subdomain as a vanity URL that redirects to http://www.simonjameswilliams.co.uk/events/galleries/

As Ben pointed out, your subdomain directory may only be accessed using your subdomain URL. Bluehost, for example, does a strange thing as it maps the subdomain directory into your regular directory. This looks to be the same for you.

Best is to put this subdomain directory outside of your regular directories, maybe call it http://www.simonjameswilliams.co.uk/subdomain_events. There you'll need to have a complete backlight installation with a separate Lr publishing service. And you will only access it as http://events.simonjameswilliams.co.uk.

I decided to document everything - some of which where it automatically creates a directory when creating a subdomain does the same with HeartInternet.

Anyway, still not worked - here is my documentation - anything obvious would be a great help!

For Backlight, your site URL should be myevents.simonjameswilliams.co.uk. You should _never_ ever use http://www.simonjameswilliams.co.uk/myevent/.

So when you log into Backlight, it would be myevents.simonjameswilliams.co.uk/backl … n/?a=login

Think of the subdomain just like an independent other domain that has nothing to do with simonjameswilliams.co.uk.

Sorry buddy - none of that worked either for access to the domain, or admin.

This should not be so complicated. I've set lots of subdomains up. Maybe it's time for a re-think.

The only think that works is by directly going to www.simonjameswilliams.co.uk/myevent/galleries

And now even that looks messed up!

You need to start with a new install and then go to http://myevents.simonjameswilliams.co.u … n/?a=login.

Off topic: what is your reason to use a subdomain?

This is what I did today and last night.

Continuity mainly Daniel. Even so, I just dont see why it isn't a simple case of pointing a subdomain into a directory and it working.

Because it is a subdomain and not a subdirectory. You are confusing Backlight as Ben pointed out and you are configuring for the wrong domain.

It is really easy:

1) fresh install for subdomain.domain.com
2) configure backlight via subdomain.domain.com/backlight

That's it.

If you have a look at post #12 you will see I started a fresh install, and detailed in great length from scratch on a new sub-domain - even re-downloading the backlight software.

I don't have a problem logging in to Backlight from the sub-domain, its just the images don't appear.

Simon, forget the folder structure on your host. In every place you can, in every place that asks for a URL, use the subdomain.

That done, if problems persist, then let us know and we'll take a look to see whether there's a server-side issue at fault. And in such a case, leave things to sit while we try to take that look, so that we can actually see what's happening. As suggested by others, though, the only problem I see running through this thread is that you're misconfiguring your setup, specifically the paths/URLs.
