Slideshow Gallery Freezes

I have created some galleries that display in slideshow mode. However regardless of computer (macs), devices (iPhones, iPads), or browser (Safari or Chrome) the galleries all freeze / lock up if I try to exit by clicking the "X" in the upper left OR by hitting the escape key...

just a guess until Matt or Ben can take a look, but it looks like it could be a javascript conflict of some sort. The console shows a security error and links to the Fancybox section of the resource.php file.
I notice that your site is running something called Act-On. Just wondering if that could be causing the conflict.

This problem was happening before I added that code... also I just tried removing it and the problem persists.

I am noticing a DOUBLE forward slash on my galleries.. is that normal?

No, it's not. And if you remove it from the url, then the album works as it should.

I take it that "fritz" is your top-level gallery?

When you look at Backlight > Publisher > top-level galleries > fritz and click on Edit Properties, what does is show for the directory?

Okay so I guess this is the issue.. is there a way to have the root directory host the galleries, rather than the gallery folder? I would prefer to be able to send my clients simple links like "clients.hursey.com/fritz" rather than "clients.hursey.com/galleries/fritz"

the top level gallery name should be the name of the folder being used as the top-level gallery. By using just the forward slash, you're adding that to the url. What is the name of the top-level folder you're publishing to? (in Publisher setup in Lightroom)

you can create separate top-level folders for each client.
Or there may be a way to set up url redirects in .htaccess (or maybe through your host)

Or you can use the Client management feature and then give each of your clients the same url: yoursite.com/backlight/client-response
They'll then sign in and be presented with a page of all their albums.

I may be wrong, but I don't think Publisher will recognize that as the site root. It may be creating a folder named "/". What does the structure look like on the site?

you see that the galleries are out there and strangely the single page rendition works fine.. it is just the slideshow that isn't happy

my guess is that the slideshow needs a top-level folder name there so that the path to access the javascript assets that are in the backlight/ folder is valid.

Ben or Matt will need to confirm.

If you wanted the url that you want, then yes, a top-level gallery folder for each client. And a Publisher instance for each client.

Yes. You might need to first remove the albums currently there and then publish the "fritz" album set and the albums within it.

If you don't want "galleries" in the url, you could set up a top-level folder named "clients" and leave "galleries" for your public work.

Okay.... setting up a separate instance for each client is not a viable solution. And I REALLY do want the simple URL. Maybe the .htaccess idea might be a solution... Will look forward to Ben or Matt weighing in?

well, yoursite/clients/client-name is a pretty simple url.

also consider using the client management feature. It will allow your client to log in, make choices, close the browser, and come back later to continue leaving feedback.
that url is a little messier but it's the same for all clients: yoursite.com/backlight/client-response/. You could use a url shortening service like Bitly to create something shorter and more personalized.

Thanks Rod.. the problem is that the url would be "clients.hursey.com/clients/clientname" (I HAVE to use a subdomain)
This all worked nicely in CE4.. just growing pains...

Backlight publishes albums into a writeable folder, typically "galleries". It is bad security practice, so generally inadvisable to make your site root writeable, and so we do not allow publishing there. Maybe you can setup on one domain, then alias a subdomain on your top-level galleries folder. I've never tried it, though.

This really isn't my root folder.. it is a subdomain (clients.hursey.com) I created specifically for this.. and because of the portfolio service I use I am not able to use the main domain (Hursey.com) for anything other than the portfolio as the DNS points elsewhere...

Makes no difference. It's the subdomain root, therefore "root". For security, and other reasons, Backlight is not designed to allow publishing to the root location.

Publisher did once upon a time support a top-level gallery directory such as ../public_html/. Not recommended, I have no idea how well it would work, and we won’t be able to support you with any issues that may arise.

Thanks guys for all the info... It is not the end of the world and I will just move everything one level lower... was just hoping to make the url easy to remember for clients. All good!

If you sign up with Bitly or one of the others, I think you can make the url whatever you want it to be for your clients. It will, of course, lead to the real url and that is what will show in browser, but a personalized url for them to click on might impress the clients
