If you're wanting to create pop-up boxes using the new Pangolin release of Backlight (1.2), the code is a little different. Backlight 1.2 uses Fancybox whereas the original Backlight uses Magnific.
Here's a sample of the code needed:
<button data-fancybox data-src="#popup">Button</button>
<div id="popup" style="display:none;"><p> Stuff and things ... </p><p>Sed maximus enim felis, et interdum risus vehicula vel. Mauris vitae ligula vulputate, facilisis odio eget, accumsan lacus. Pellentesque suscipit ante leo, sed consectetur magna aliquet at. Fusce consectetur ullamcorper rhoncus. Fusce ac aliquam nisl. Vestibulum ac congue lorem.</p></div>
and a demo page: http://pangolin.barbeephoto.com/?page=pop-up
And here’s a post on styling your pop-up box

And to have an inline link instead of a button use
<a data-fancybox data-src="#popup" href="javascript:;">popup</a>
<div id="popup" style="display:none;"><p> Stuff and things ... </p><p>Sed maximus enim felis, et interdum risus vehicula vel. Mauris vitae ligula vulputate, facilisis odio eget, accumsan lacus. Pellentesque suscipit ante leo, sed consectetur magna aliquet at. Fusce consectetur ullamcorper rhoncus. Fusce ac aliquam nisl. Vestibulum ac congue lorem.</p></div>
