Attached are two images of the same gallery webpage created with Backlight 1.2. All templates are at their default settings with the gallery style for the thumbnail grid of the album set to classic in one case and justified for the other. Notice that the aspect ratio of the thumbnails for the justified style are skewed. My attempts to change settings to improve this situation all seem to make it much worse. I expect that I am missing something obvious but does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Did you republish your images after making the change? Lightroom needs to generate new thumbnails for the updated layout.
And if you double-click the publisher, there's an option in its settings to only upload thumbnails. This will skip re-building the larger images, and will save you some time.

I thought that I had correctly republished but apparently not as when I deleted the album and started again from scratch things worked correctly. Thank you for the response and for Backlight.

I made this minor observation:
When "Push metadata without updating existing photos" is checked, "Publish thumbnails without updating other renditions" is greyed out.
When "Push metadata ..." is unchecked, "Push thumbnails ..." can be checked.
When "Push metadata ..." is checked again, "Push thumnails ..." gets grey out again, but its state remains checked.
Probably due to a limitation in LR.

Yep. If it's greyed out, then it's inactive.
