I have looked all over your documentation but I could not find an illustration of the different page looks indicating what every part is called (header, grid, etc.). This makes it difficult to communicate so please update in the future.
I want to change the color of the background behind/between and around the thumbnails and the grid. Now everything around them is white. I tried the page layout part of the backlight standard page and all the album page designs, but nothing works.

In the page template under Main Column > Background Color
This controls the background color for all content in the main column (not the trays, footer, masthead, etc)
If you need to change the background color of just the thumbnail grid, that will require custom css.
try this selector: .the__gallery
