What are the elements I need to set up for someone to email me through my contacts page? Currently, emails sent to my gmail acct from my contact page never arrive.
I have a gmail account, and I'd like to receive the contact messages through that account. Do I also need to have email configured at my hosting site, even though I'm using gmail? I don't currently have any email set up on the host.
Any help would be appreciated, as this is not intuitive.

what settings are you using now?
If I remember, using Gmail means you need to use SMTP
In Backlight Settings > Email Configuration, take a look at the Informational icons that are next to each of the settings. Hover over them for more setup info.

mail: mail (if I use smtp here, I get an error msg from my contact page, but with the setting of "mail" no error message, but no email arrives either)
smtp host: smtp.gmail.com
smtp username: michael.sobel@gmail.com
smtp passw: my gmail password
smtp port: 465
smtp sec protoc: ssl
That's it. Does my web site host need to be involved, or configured at all?
Thanks for any help...

If you're using the "Mail" option then the smtp settings don't matter.
I think that with gmail you need to use smtp. You may need to get different port information from Google.
I don't know that your hosting service needs to be involved. Perhaps Ben will weigh in with a more definitive answer.

Unsolved... if I switch from the "mail" option to SMTP, I get the following error message on my site:
Something went wrong
fsockopen(): unable to connect to ssl://smtp.gmail.com:465 (Connection timed out) in SMTP.php on line 121

That will help Ben.
Is your site using https?

Your host doesn't allow the connection to the gmail server. You'll either need them to allow this or use the 'mail' option.
