Wordpress Site with Backlight Gallery

So I am updating my entire site and business. I was using CE3 before this. I love TTG for galleries and wanted the whole site feature but found it didn't fit me for what I wanted. I do however want TTG to handle all my gallery functions and have Worpress handle the rest of the site.

I have wordpress at my root for Joshline.com and want Backlight to handle joshline.com/gallery and all subs from there. I know I am approaching this backwards from the intended purpose but I am hoping it will work. Also I do not care about the difference in looks between gallery and the rest of the site. I will address that later. Just hoping this will work so I do not waste any further effort trying to combine these two systems.

So when I go to the gallery link it is trying to find the wordpress portion. When I type in the dircet URL for the Backlight page it comes up with no formatting.

Im sure I am doing something wrong but not sure what.

Re: Wordpress Site with Backlight Gallery

I see that you've installed backlight into joshline.com/ That's correct.
But your Galleries page https://www.joshline.com/galleries/ is looking for styling at

http://joshline.com/gallery/backlight/....

Try changing the site url in Backlight Settings to

https://www.joshline.com/

this way the pages will have the right path to the css.

It looks like you probably set the site url to joshline.com/gallery/

Also, Backlight by default publishes to a folder named "galleries". That's what's going on right now at your site. But since you've got joshline.com/gallery/ as the site url, when you click on Josh Line Photography on the Galleries page, the result is a page not found error.

Re: Wordpress Site with Backlight Gallery

Hi Josh,

Everything Rod says above is correct. There's nothing unusual about what you're trying to do. Backlight was built with just such a setup in mind, so it should pose no problem for you. The way you'll want things set up -- which it sounds like you've already got -- is both systems together in the site root, like this:

/backlight
/galleries
/wp-admin
/wp-content
index.php (from WP)
etc.

You'll want to use joshline.com as the site URL for both systems, so not joshline.com/galleries.

The only gotcha to watch out for, since the index.php file in the root is from WordPress, if you have Backlight's Pages Add-on, don't use it. Or if you want to use it for some reason, then let us know and we'll probably have to setup a folder in which to use it. I think WordPress can probably cover your pages needs, though.

Re: Wordpress Site with Backlight Gallery

I am using pages. I think that may part of the issue as well. What should I do to have Backlight take control from /galleries on down?

Re: Wordpress Site with Backlight Gallery

Hi Josh,

Sorry, but I'm not sure I fully understand the question. Backlight should be able to publish to /galleries by default, and WordPress should have nothing to do with that folder.

Backlight's Pages Add-on requires all of the following, from the Backlight ZIP file, to operate:

/backlight
.htaccess
index.php

If you're running WordPress as your home location, then you would instead by using WordPress' index.php and .htaccess files. And in such a case, then just don't use Backlight's page features.

If you do want to use Backlight's page features, then you'll want to put the .htaccess and index.php files into a separate folder -- /pages, maybe -- and then you will likely need to do some .htaccess manipulation to get things working. Ben could advise you best on that.

The other standard option is to use Backlight as home, and to dump Wordpress into an isolated folder, such as /blog.
