As instructed, I uploaded the backlight and the galleries folders plus the index.php file to my server. But, trying to access /backlight, I get the 500 internal server error.
Why?

Also, should I install backlight for every new web site I create? What about the CE4 web sites I now manage? Should I re-do all of them?

Ben is going to need a URL to your site.
To the question of re-doing your CE4 sites, that's up to you. If you've been using Publisher, there's a migration tool in Backlight to place CE4 albums and album sets under Backlight control.
You can manage CE4 and Backlight side by side, but things won't look consistent throughout the site and you'll have to be

I fixed the 500 issue. It was a permissions question 755 rather than 777.
As for the "transfer" of my CE4 sites, I looked up a method in your blog and I will be trying it out.

Yeah, it gets a little sticky when converting old exported and uploaded galleries to Backlight. But if you've got them all as collections in Lightroom, it shouldn't be hard, just time consuming.

And it is always good to make a backup before you do the transfer.

This does not work. I get the message:
"Ce site ne peut être rejoint. L'adresse DNS de ww38.pideja.ca n'a pu être trouvée." Means the DNS for pideja.ca can't be found!

The address is http://www.pideja.ca but the problem is I'm not sure of both user name and password.
Can these be reset to admin/ttg8888 ?
Offline
You should be able to recover with the procedure outlined in the docs.
Otherwise, I think you can just delete the admin database file (backlight/data/admin.sq3) and then login using the default credentials. I'm going by memory as I'm not at my PC to chech/test.
You'll have to go through all your settings again.
If you don't want to try that, then wait for Ben or send him an email

How can I reach Ben?
I do not have a (backlight/data/admin.sq3) but rather (backlight/data/); no admin.sq3 file.
I did find (backlight/data/admin/master.sq3) but it's not the same.
I might try deleting everything and starting over...

As I said, I'm going from memory. It's probably master

I just run the password retrieval for admin on your site using the procedure Rod linked to. It seemed to be successful:
"The password has been retrieved."
Now you have can get to the password at /backlight/data/admin/password.txt:
These create a file on your server that can be accessed via FTP at /backlight/data/admin/password.txt. The first function creates a list of usernames and passwords for all users. The second function outputs the password for the specified user.

When I try http://yoursite.com/backlight/admin/?a= … ssword&p1=[USER_NAME] witch, on my test site translates to:
http://pideja.ca/test/backlight/admin/? … ssword&p1=[admin] I get the "The DNS address for ww38.pideja.ca could not
be found." error.
The site is at www.pideja.ca/test
Also, after installing Backlite the first time, I have to update the credentials, including user name + password. But everytime, the new
user/password combination is not recognized.

In the password retrieval documentation, [USER_NAME] needs to be replaced entirely with the username, i.e. with admin, and not with [admin].
As Daniel stated, he visited that link successfully. I can confirm this. Your usernames and passwords are available in the file backlight/data/admin/password.txt. Find that file via FTP.

issue resolved: after many tries, for some reason, the user (admin) / password (updated by me) worked.
Thanks Ben, Rod and Daniel.
