file format in the 'original' folder for download

In creating the downloadable folders for the Cart in each of the galleries, I want to allow downloading of the original file. In my case I have Nikon (.nef), Sony(.orf, .arw) and so on.
In order to make these shots universally available, do I convert them to .DNG?
I have used jpeg for all the other folders (for different sizes).
Also, the file sizes of raw files in my case can reach 19-23 Mbytes. What do you suggest?

Hi Gary, Matt or Rod will need to comment on the suitability of the DNG format.

For such large files you may want to consider enabling offline digital purchases. With that mode, customers can purchase digital images without the files residing on your server. You then upload files matching those purchased via the Cart's order management function. Doing so saves needing to export and upload large images for every purchasable photo.

either way, whoever downloads the images will need a way to view raw files. DNG would be the most universal. Any version of Lightroom will be able to work with dng files, as will Photoshop.

Personally, I wouldn't want anyone else interpreting my original raw files, but if your client/publisher needs to have control over the processing you should probably ask them what program they're using to view/edit raw files.

A website is not a particularly viable platform for transferring raw files, and Backlight certainly is not designed for it. Insofar as I am aware, literally nothing is. If you need some way to deliver raw files to clients, then you should be using a file-send service. Dropbox would be one option, though not a particular fantastic one for the specific task. You might look into https://www.hightail.com; I haven't used it recently, but our studio used it to send large batches of files back when it was still YouSendIt.

Thanks all, very good thoughts and advice. I believe RAW files are not the best way to sell images. Is there a way in Cart when "ORIGINAL" is selected that I can provide text explaining the way I would want to do it? I would probably use dropbox. I just need a way to make clients aware that RAW is available for a price and would be handled offline.

Perhaps a purchase option along the lines of "Offline Delivery of Camera Raw Image File". Or maybe use something shorter and less precise, but in your terms at checkout, include a statement that any orders of raw files are not immediately downloadable, but will be delivered separately.

I do not understand when the actual 'purchase' occurs. Online? Offline? I have implemented the advice above: search page Now I cannot get a drop down item of raw purchase to appear even though I have implemented it:
No matter the times I have cleared caches, etc. The option for Raw files does not appear. I have republish the images also.
The only items that are listed are Digital Download, Print, and eMail Size.
