Wow - backlight is SO much easier to work with
Almost ready with updated site but need advise re. Two top level galleries.
I have two publisher instances created for galleries and private (the later is for storing my private stuff like travel/family photos) and I'd like to access is by simply adding a "/private" to the url of my site.
What is the best way to do this and stil have a nice album set displayed as I right now just get an index of the directory

If /private is setup with its own publisher instance, then it should work just fine as is. It will be registered in Backlight as a top-level gallery, and you can assign an album set template from the admin's Backlight => Publisher => Top-level Galleries menu.

Got it working now, thanks.
Issue was that only the privat directory was created but now backlight core files were uploaded for some reason.
I simply deleted and recreated it

You'll need to first publish an album to the private/ instance for the top level album set to be created
