I read:
"Backlight is not standalone software. The Backlight web-application should be deployed to a local or remote web server adhering to the above requirements; for online use, a domain name and standard web hosting are required."
1. What is "standalone software"?
2. Does Backlight run on my server or on some other processor?
3. Where do the websites I create reside? Do I have control of where they reside?
4. Does the website reside in a "remote" location [in the cloud] and is redirected to my domain? :-(
TIA.

1. it doesn't install on your computer
2. on your server
3. on hosting you purchase from a web host provider. You own it, you control it.
4. the site resides on your domain.
Backlight is much like WordPress in that the software that makes it work is installed on your server. The only part of it that resided on your computer is the Publisher plug-in for Lightroom.

Thanks! Do you have many people calling you "Rob Darbee"? ;-)
Another question:
Is there a trial?

No, it's usually Rob. Or Ron.
