I know I can convert my CE4 Gallery into Backlight.
Is it possible to just convert my CE4 templates? I plan to rework my Gallery and it would be nice to not have to reinvent the wheel with creating new templates.
Thanks!

No.
But designing in Backlight is amazingly easier than in Lightroom. I've been able to mimic the look of two sites pretty easily and quickly.

If I convert my current gallery, will the templates it uses be converted as well, or do I have to recreate them using Backlight?
If it does convert the templates, can I just then delete the albums and use the converted templates in new albums?

If you're using CE4 Publisher, you can migrate control of those albums and album sets to Backlight. At that point, the albums will be using Backlight templates.

So, what you are saying is the CE4 templates do not get migrated and have to be recreated using Backlight, correct?

According to the documents, once you've migrated existing CE4 albums to Backlight Publisher control, they'll be using a Backlight created template. The CE4 templates will no longer be used.
The album files are updated to use Backlight templates

Rod, I am sorry that I am not getting my question expressed correctly.
Let me try it this way:
1 - I have a CE4 Gallery that I created with Lightroom.
2 - I install Backlight according to the instructions.
3 - I tell Backlight to convert my Gallery to Backlight.
Now my questions:
1 - Will the "new" gallery look exactly the same as the old one?
2 - Will there be Backlight templates created by the conversion that match the templates that I used in CE4? I need these as I create new albums, etc.
Thanks!

If it's an exported and uploaded gallery rather than a Publisher album, then you'll have to start from scratch. There's no migration for stand alone galleries.
1 - Will the "new" gallery look exactly the same as the old one?
if it's an album using a Backlight template that you've created to look just like the old album template, then yes (well, close anyway). But if you've not created any Backlight templates, then the albums will use the Standard Backlight template, which will look nothing like your old gallery.
2 - Will there be Backlight templates created by the conversion that match the templates that I used in CE4?
If you design them that way. But if you're expecting Backlight to convert your CE4 templates to a Backlight version, that's not going to happen.

One point to be made is that the Backlight Designer is an entirely new tool that has not a single line of code in common with the CE4 web plugins. The way that plugins are made, the types of settings, the way the settings are stored, and the rendering of pages are entirely different between CE4 and Backlight. So there is no conversions process for templates between the two.

OK, that answers my question. I DO have to create new templates in Backlight.
Not a problem.
Thanks!

You'll find it easy, and possibly even fun, to do.
