Website updated to CE4

I finally got my website updated from CE3 to CE4 (just in time for Backlight!). I changed things up a bit this time with a dark theme and cleaned up the galleries structure by using search based links. I used Stage for most of extra pages working with the responsive framework. I am real happy with how it all turned out and it breaks down nicely on smaller devices. Many thanks to Rod and Matthew for the help along the way! You can check it out at: https://www.montetrumbull.com/.

Re: Website updated to CE4

really nice. Your site has always complemented your photography. And this new design (and your custom enhancements) is no exception.
Love your work.

Looks great, Monte. Beautiful images. I like how you succeeded using search for some of your gallery pages. Really cool!

Cheers - Daniel

Re: Website updated to CE4

Looks great, Monte! As Rod has said, you've always done a fantastic job matching your site design to your imagery. I'm just sorry you put in the work so close to the release of Backlight.

Pretty interesting way of managing your galleries, btw, using search. So, only the galleries on your Home page operate this way?

Re: Website updated to CE4

Thanks Matt! No big deal on switching to Backlight in the future. At least I can carry over the basic design and a lot of the background stuff. Looking forward to not having to wait on Lightroom!

The only real galleries on my galleries menu are the categories. All of the rest are search based. I really like how it came out. What would be nice is to be able to do a little customization for each search such as title, etc. but I am sure that would be some work.

Thanks again for the great work you have done with the templates. I had thought about switching over a lot of stuff to ArtStoreFronts, but couldn't give up the ability to really customize my site.

Re: Website updated to CE4

I really like your "smart galleries" idea and using the power of the search term options, something I've not really explored. In fact, I may incorporate that idea so that I can avoid posting the same image in multiple albums like "personal favorites," "latest work," and the actual album the image belongs in.
It means I have to be more disciplined with keywords...

Re: Website updated to CE4

Thanks Rod. I was tired of having the same image in multiple galleries as well. I also wanted to offer more options to view the images (like aspect ratio). I had seen this on quite a few other photographers sites (especially those done by Wide Range Galleries).

You do have to be very disciplined on keywords. I have a set of keywords grouped under a top level keyword of WEBSITE. Under that are the respective keywords used to create the galleries, REGION (for Location), SEASON, ASPECT, and Personal Favorite (to make the home page collections). I am probably going to add Recent when I start getting some processing done too! Before an image can go on the website, I go through the list and assign each keyword before publishing. I have Smart Collections setup that show what should be in the search gallery online to keep track. What is cool is that you can just change keywords and publish just metadata to add or remove an image from a gallery.

Re: Website updated to CE4

You're going to send me down another rabbit hole.... roll

I've not really done a whole lot with keywords in Lightroom other than just typing a few in. I need to explore setting up levels like you've done.
Off to Victoria Bampton's book...

Re: Website updated to CE4

I have a lot of cleaning up to do. A long time ago I imported a controlled vocabulary and that needs some cleaning. But I'll probably start with something like you've done, create a WEBSITE group and create some keyword sets from that.
It'll be fun, in an "I like math" sort of way.

Re: Website updated to CE4

Hey Matt. I realized this afternoon the the code I put in to display a popup on the home page broke the dropdown menus. That is probably why you didn't see the other galleries. I have taken it out for now. Any ideas why this code in the head would break things?

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0" />
<link rel="stylesheet" href="./popup/colorbox/colorbox.css" />
<script src="./popup/common/libs_js/jquery-1.4.4.min.js"></script>
<script src="./popup/colorbox/jquery.colorbox.js"></script>
<script>
	var $fb_pop = jQuery.noConflict();

	$fb_pop(document).ready(function(){
	setTimeout( function(){ $fb_pop.colorbox({href:"./popup/popup.html", iframe:true, innerWidth:"362px", height:"80%", maxHeight:"435px", fixed:true}) }, 5000 );
	$fb_pop(".fb_iframe").colorbox({iframe:true, innerWidth:"362px", height:"80%", maxHeight:"435px", fixed:true });
	});
</script>

Thanks - Monte

Re: Website updated to CE4

just a guess on my part, but the jquery version (1.4.4) that's getting called? It's an earlier version than the version TTG uses (1.11.3). Because the version designated on your pop up code comes later on the page, I'm wondering if it overrides the 1.11.3 version. This might be creating a conflict.

You could try altering the code to remove the line calling the jquery and just go with what the page is already loading.

Re: Website updated to CE4

Rod is probably spot on there. You should never be calling two separate versions of jQuery.

Re: Website updated to CE4

Thanks for the replies Rod and Matt. Interesting, but when I remove that one line then the menu is still broken and the slideshow never loads. It looks like I might just need to find another way to popup an iframe.

Re: Website updated to CE4

Did you try clearing browser cache after removing that line?

Re: Website updated to CE4

Yeah, plenty of times. It has to be something in the colorbox script itself. Once I remove that section all is well.

Re: Website updated to CE4

FYI. I got it to work by switching from using Colorbox to Fancybox. It works with the latest jQuery (and is easier to format as well). Thanks for all the help!

Re: Website updated to CE4

Have got to say, I'm not a fan of FancyBox. The developer has been promising a mobile-compatible version 3 for years, but has failed to deliver. He keeps insisting the project isn't dead, but years of inactivity have proven otherwise. Meanwhile, I an ongoing feed from Github for the Fancybox repository, and the issues just keep piling up.

CE4 already leverages Magnific Popup (cart modals, crg modals, and as a gallery presentation option), which we like a lot. You might take a look at using that instead.

Re: Website updated to CE4

Hey Matt. I hear you there. I thought of that after I went down this path. I think for now I will at least get it working right (still have some CSS work), and then look at switching.

Thanks - Monte

Re: Website updated to CE4

I took your suggestion and went ahead and switched to using Magnific for the popup. It is handy to use something you already are using! If you care to check it out, you may need to delete your "visited" cookie from my site. I only popup once and then wait 30 days.

Thanks again - Monte
