Hi Rod,
On your site, you mention :
"But, if you set up your test site in a sub-domain rather than a sub-folder, you can simply use the forward slash (/) as the site root".
I have set up a subdomain, and my test site was working ok as long as I was not using that forward / .
Then I tried to use / (in Pages, Gallery and Autoindex) instead of http://yourdomain.... for the test site and now the home page loads ok, but not the other pages, these are refering now to the root of site, not the subdomain.
What is my mistake ?

not sure, can you post a link? Without it I can only guess.
You should be using either / or http://your-subdomain.yoursite.com in the Site Root field under Website in Site Info.
Under Navigation Hyperlinks make sure you're not using http://yoursite.com/about.php (for example) but rather /about.php (or the defaults Matt has set up)

I don't see any reference to about.php under Naviguation hyperlinks .

If I start with :
http://www.testce4.bleverd-photo.net/ , it works for all pages
I was starting with
http://www.bleverd-photo.net/testce4/ , it does not work after the home page

the link you gave me is to a sub-folder, not a sub-domain.
as sub-domain will have the address of subdomain-name.yoursite.com. The address you gave me is yoursite.com/ce4test/
Did you create a sub-domain via your host's C-Panel?
Regardless, if you want your links to go to your test sub-folder, then you need to put /testce4/ in the Site Root field.
I don't see any reference to about.php under Naviguation hyperlinks .
a link Matt has this simply as "about" in the Target field in the plugins. But if you use /about.php, you'd get the same thing (or, for your test folder, /ce4test/about.php)
Anyway, if you change the Site Root to /ce4test/, you can then just leave the targets at their default settings.
