Hi Rod,
after several attempts I hope now to have understood the following:
- The presentation of the image galleries is determined with Pages?
- The presentation of the individual images of a photo gallery is determined with Gallery?
Now my Question: What are the main functions of Auto Index?

The Galleries page of Pages is an Autoindex.
If you want to further organize into sub-indexes, that's where Autoindex comes in.
Also, if you're using Publisher you need to use Autoindex to create the templates for Album Sets
