I've downloaded the new lrwebengine folders for gallery (6.1.6) and auto-index (7.0.7), and replaced and removed the old files in the Win7 Web Galleries folder. However when I open Lightroom, I still see the old version numbers displayed (6.1.5 and 7.05)

The new versions should display in the Site Info control pane.
I know that the first release of Autoindex 7.0.7 showed 7.0.6, but the latest version has the right number. You may need to download it again to pick up the fixed version.
Gallery is showing 6.1.6 for me.
Did you first unzip your downloads?

Did you ever double-click install the plugins (as we tell you NOT to do)? If so, you may have old versions lurking in odd places on your system. You'll need to root them out.

OK now thanks. Maybe the problem was that I'd relabelled the old folders by extending the filename suffix (CE4-Gallery.lrwebengine-old) ??

Yeah, that will do it. Those things have got to be OUT of the Web Galleries folder.
