I want my blog to look very similar to the example you get in the Appearance Pane with .... Single Post w/images.

I want image left, text right in first post, then image right and text left in the next post and so on.

(I had this sorted a few days ago, now I'm all lost again.)

Whats the easy way?

Is there recommended Plugin for general and simple layout help for newbie CSS style sheet wimps?

When adding images to a post, set the image alignment: left, right, center, or none.
If the image is already in the post, while you're in the editor just click on it and you'll see a bar on the top. Click the pencil icon to edit the image and choose the alignment you want.

yes but sometimes the text will only stay above or below the image, amongst other frustrations

if it's really just that simple, I guess I'll keep at it

Sometimes WordPress can be frustrating when it comes to laying out page, especially if you're using multiple images (just one image is pretty easy). That's when a little bit of html knowledge can come in handy. I'll often have to clear paragraphs to get them to drop below a left or right floated image.

there are some decent page builder plug-ins out there that can make layouts easier. Beaver Builder is pretty good, and they have a free version: https://wordpress.org/plugins/beaver-bu … e-version/

I find WordPress easier to deal with when editing posts and pages using the "Text" editor, rather than the "Visual" editor. The visual editor is a mess.

is there anyway to SAVE a post/theme/layout - so if I have it nice and then mess it up, I can get back again - also to use as a template for another post later on?

you can click the "Restore this Revision" button. you can also restore pieces from previous versions. This video explains how revisions work:

all those wp101 videos are pretty good.

To compare to versions, I suppose you could create one post with the image left and another with the image right. Then open one post in one browser tab and the other in another browser tab.
