Help Needed - Password Protection

Hi there,

I recently upgraded from CE3 to CE4 and there seems to be some issues with password protecting a gallery. Of course I could be doing something extremely silly but I am literally at my wits end and would gratefully appreciate some help.

I've made several galleries with just CE4:

http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/evt/

http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/hl/

These work just great, however when I try to password protect a gallery like this one:

http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/tl/

I get some stress.

First thing I checked was which version of PHP my host is running, they confirm version PHP 5.4.

I can't offer the log in details as I must protect the wishes of my client but is there anything that's obvious to you fine folks with far better knowledge?

Any help is tremendously appreciated.

Kind regards

Tomas

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

There's not much I can tell about it from what's given. I'd start by disabling PHPlugins on the gallery to simply debugging, then trying the password protection again. Also make sure you're running the current plugin version.

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

Hi Matthew,

Many thanks for your time smile

I bought and downloaded CE4 last week, so I assume that's the latest?

Also, are there any directions for 'debugging'? I searched on these forums but it came up blank, so did 'disable php plugins'.

EDIT - I just checked the gallery within LR and 'Enable PHP plugins isn't checked:

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

Maybe it's possible that the reason the password protection fails is also the same reason why the auto index shows no galleries?

http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/

The following galleries are in that same directory:

http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/evt/
http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/hl/
http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/ntl/

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/

the reason the autoindex is failing is that it's not an autoindex. That page is made with CE4 Gallery

if you don't want to reveal client images, can you then just create a password protected gallery of random, non-sensitive images? See if the password protection on that doesn't work and post the link if it doesn't.

Also, does your client's gallery contain the Google ads like your others do?

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

Hi Rod,

Many thanks for your time, I really appreciate it.

Okay, here is another created gallery with exactly the same template as the client gallery, only the password has been changed:

http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/test/

All the galleries contain Google ads.

I really hope we can find the issue that is stopping the galley from functioning correctly.

As for the auto index, I'll have another try but I am really having no luck following the directions.

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

if the galleries contain Google ads, how did you place them, other than using phplugins?

It could be that the script is conflicting with the password protection script. So the first step in troubleshooting should be to disable those ads

As for the auto index, I'll have another try but I am really having no luck following the directions.

Well, the problem with the "index" you linked to is that it's not an autoindex, it's a gallery. You need to use CE4 Autoindex.
Export (name it printshop) and upload the entire exported folder. Put your exported gallery folders inside of the "printshop" folder

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

Thanks Rod!

My apologies, I should have been more clear - I intend for all my galleries to have ads but the test gallery I linked to has none. Nor does the client gallery I desperately need the password protection working on: http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/tl/

I use no plugins and insert the google ads manually along with the Google tracking code.

It's the last thing I do once a gallery is up and running.

As for the auto index, I just tried your suggestion and interestingly enough the same error appears:

http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop

Internal Server Error:
Directory "/home/storym4chi/domains/tomaswhitehouse.com/public_html/printshop" is writeable by group

That page (http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop) is made with CE4 Gallery. I can tell by looking at the source code.
I suggest that you simply delete it. Export a CE4 Autoindex and name it "printshop" (you do have CE4 Autoindex?).
Upload the exported "printshop" folder. Then place your galleries within that folder.

as to you password protected galleries, I'd first suggest removing those Google ads. If you're also manually adding the Google tracking, rather than using the built in field for that, remove that code as well.

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

I've done all that, try clearing your cache:

You should be seeing this:

http://gyazo.com/b13c14f2585a6c3fdca7ab12dc9eff8a

When trying to load the page:

http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/

As for disabling ads - as I mentioned - there are none to disable as the codes for the ads and the google tracking code have not been pasted into the index files yet:

These are all ad and tracking code free:

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

have you tried changing permissions on that folder?
755 or 777 should work.

to try to pinpoint the problem, can you try putting a password protected gallery either in a plain folder or directly in the root of the site and then see if password protection works. If it does, then it may be an Autoindex issue.
On the off chance that some sort of corruption occurred, you could try downloading your copy of Autoindex and reinstalling it.

As Ben often notes, 500 errors are hard to diagnose. He may need FTP access to go in and see what's happening.

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

Thanks Rod, I was just admiring the Northern Lights shot on your website. That's a hell of shot! I've indulged in the whole collection, you have lovely work Sir smile

Anyway, yes, I have tried changing the permissions both 755 and 777 (which is what they are set to by default). Seems to have no effect sad

I created another test gallery:

http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/test2/

username: Username
password: Password

This loads but totally bypasses the password protection for some reason. I have triple checked that when creating the test2 gallery that 'Enable Password Protection' is checked.

I am more than willing to hand over my ftp details to Ben, I recall him saving the day when I had some bugs with CE2 a good while ago.

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

the login screen shows for me, but the username and password don't work.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about server issues to be much of a help. Might be time to send Ben a PM

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

Hi Ben,

While I await your wizardry, my client has agreed to have a non password protected gallery over having to wait any longer to begin browsing so I have had to change the following gallery to a non password protected one:

http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/tl

However, I will leave the test gallery live that also displayed the same problems:

http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/test

At some point I am going to have to password protect galleries for clients, so if we can get to the bottom of this, I would be really happy smile

Kind regards

Tomas

Hi Tomas, I'll look into this tonight Melbourne time. It may be helpful to also have FTP access and the TTG BE admin login.

In the meantime, Tomas, you might always contact your host to ask whether something on their side of things is preventing the page from rendering.

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

Hi Tomas,  thanks for the FTP details.  I found that the permissions of printshop were 775.  Changing it to 755 allows the login form to appear at http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/test/

(The middle 7 in 775 meant 'readable, writeable and executable by the group'.  Changing that 7 to 5 means 'readable and executable by group', which resolves the error complaining about the group being able to write to the directory)

Can you see whether you can now login to the test gallery?

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

Hi Ben!

Many thanks mate, I just tried the test gallery and it loads the gallery without the log in screen.

I have never used the log in details before, does me being signed into TTG&cart make any difference?

Thanks again Ben

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

HI Tomas,

I get the log-in screen when I visit this page: http://www.tomaswhitehouse.com/printshop/test/

you may not be getting it if you've already visited it once after logging in. Try clearing browser cache and doing a Ctrl-F5 refresh of the page. Also try visiting from another browser.

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

Hi Rod,

Thanks for your suggestions mate, I've done all of the above and finally gotten success when visiting from my laptop and iphone.

Anyway, it seems that everything is now working as it should and I can only convey my absolute gratitude and thanks to all here.

TTG is a one of kind and without it, offering a service to the parents of the small skating clubs I work with each year, would just not be financially viable without it.

I sincerely thank you all smile

T.

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

it is a wonderful system, isn't it? Without it I many never have gotten around to putting up galleries on my old, old site.
And now I have my complete photo site along with several other ttg-based sites.
And I've learned a ton about html, css, php, javascript, web design in general, WordPress......

(TTG has created a monster yikes )

Re: Help Needed - Password Protection

That's great Rod!

Likewise good Sir smile

I think it was the beginning of the summer 2010 maybe 2011 perhaps, I had a real issue on my hands as I had to find a way of making photo galleries that I could sell prints to the skaters and parents from the clubs I was working with.

There are a few companies over here in Finland that will do everything for you - host the gallery and process the order as well as send the images out to the customer but the percentages you pay for the subscription and the cut they take, it's just not worth the effort.

Then there are e-commerce solutions that have no method of applying attributes on import, so each photo has to be treated like an individual product.

The last gallery I uploaded for parents had 2700+ shots. Imagine having to inventory that and add each image as an individual product.

I also called a software company and asked how much it would be to have a small piece of software designed, they approximated around 150,000€.
It was an interesting conversation, I think the coffee stain is still visible on the ceiling and on my old Samsung display.

TTG is literally a life saver for me in so many ways. I have learned a lot but my knowledge is still very limited and I make many mistakes, but TTG gives a chap like me a chance at getting job like this done smile

I wish all the very, very best for it's future smile
