Basics

Hi,

I was initially put off CE4 as it was way more complex than the sales text implied. Although I have finally managed to get a website using Pages, I don't understand how to a) get a slideshow on the home page and b) how to set up the other pages. From the documentation I have several pages, including services, info and galleries etc. Although some of these page title are useful, I wanted to use my own (replicating my existing website), but that looks quite complicated.

Also, the PHP Plugin is 'totally recommended' and 'not too difficult to understand', according the the documentation. However, when I followed the link to setting this part up, it tells a different story, including knowledge of PHP script, HTML and CSS, familiarity using an FTP client and text-editor to access and manipulate files on a web-server. So, you can understand why I'm confused and out of my depth.

Re: Basics

In CE4 Pages, using the default navigation menu, click the desired item in the site menu to navigate to that page. Then work on the corresponding controls in the UI. In the "Color Palette" control panel, there are sections for each page.

And PHPlugins aren't difficult to setup, nor is it difficult to implement any of our examples. A lot of it is copy-and-paste. It gets "difficult" when you go out on your own, writing original functions. And even then, it's not so difficult for those familiar with PHP. But using PHPlugins to manage you navigation menu, for example, is easy; we've already written all of the code for you.

Re: Basics

The thing about phplugins and custom css is that, at first, you don't really need to understand php and css. If you need to modify something on your site that requires custom css, chances are somebody on the forum can give you the code.

I think it's a good idea to enable site wide phplugins and custom css upon site creation just in case you might need it in the future. Just enabling it doesn't change your site any. It will just avoid having to re-do things when/if you need it.
http://ttg-tips-and-tricks.barbeephoto. … ins-start/

If you want to use an existing page, say a services page, you could just put the url to that page in the site navigation. So instead of the default target for Services, put the url to your own page. Though this won't match the styling of the rest of your site.
If you want to embed your current page, then you'll need to learn how to use phplugins. If you want to try this, we can help.

Otherwise, include the same text. If you have images within that text you can include those using html.

If you want a slide show on your Pages home page, go to Appearance > the Gallery and assign the gallery to the Home page and choose Galleria slide show

Re: Basics

Hi Matthew / Rod,
Thanks for your replies and links. Regarding the pages on my site. I don't actually want to link them to my current site, but replicate them in CE4. It's just that the page titles don't match what I need. For example, I would like the Services page to be my Client Photography page. Do I just enter my preferred label and just use one of the default targets? I don't have so many pages, it's just that the titles are different to the ones supplied in CE4

Oh, and I've managed to switch on the slide show and assign it to the home page but how do I select the images I need for the show?

Thanks,
Dayve

Yes. the url will still be /services.php but the label can be anything you want.

Include them in the filmstrip. An easy way to do this is to make the web collection you're working with the Target Collection in Lightroom. Right-click on the collection and choose "Make Target Collection" Then go into your library and use the shortcut key "B" to assign images to that collection.
All images in the filmstrip except those you specifically assign to any of the pages in Pages will appear in the slideshow:

Re: Basics

Thanks again Rod,

So I've now got a slide show on the home page and wanted to add a small number of galleries on the gallery page. When I selected the images in the filmstrip for the gallery page, I get all of them with individual albums, rather than having a few albums with several images in each. I assume that's possible, but not sure how...

Re: Basics

have you seen this tutorial? It should answer most of your questions
http://ce4.theturninggate.net/docs/doku.php?id=ce4_101

You'll need to create galleries with CE4 Gallery and upload them to the galleries/ folder

post a link to your site and I can probably tell you what's going on with the links

Re: Basics

Yes, thanks, I've looked through that tutorial but it seemed to gloss over things and not really explain what to do :-(

When I clicked on the CE4 gallery, do I have to fill in all the info I completed in the Page section or is there a way to link that?

Here's my site link:

No, when you place exported galleries in the galleries/ folder, they will automatically appear on your Galleries page

the reason that the links aren't working is because your site is in a sub-folder and your navigation links are aimed at the root of the site.
To fix this, make sure you have /test-site/ in the Site Root field of the Site Info control pane

Re: Basics

be sure to go over this section again: http://ce4.theturninggate.net/docs/doku … e4_gallery
It explains the bare basics of creating a gallery. It then explains about exporting and uploading the gallery to the /galleries/ folder.

Ah, I though you meant when you click on the galleries link on your site.

Yep, the template sharing trick is the way to go.

Re: Basics

Thanks for the links. I've made a simple gallery and uploaded it to the galleries folder but my site links are still not all working. The home page works (http://www.photographybyward.co.uk/test … leries.php) but the links don't, including the gallery link (http://www.photographybyward.co.uk/galleries.php). Looks like it's missing off the test-site folder, but I'm not sure why...

Re: Basics

The gallery exists and is located at http://www.photographybyward.co.uk/test … t-folio-1/

I am wondering if the autoindex component used in galleries.php gets confused because you have your test site in a subdirectory. If you can, I would recommend to use a subdomain for your test site.

Re: Basics

Hi, yeah, I'm afraid I'm still having problems with the links between the site and the gallery. I can see that they work individually (apart from the contact page which just says 'ttg-be could not be found'), but the link from the site to the gallery (called client photography) doesn't work properly (it takes you to a page, but not the gallery). I do have everything within a sub domain called test-site as I need to keep my existing site (designed in Dream Weaver). Not sure how to include a screenshot of the folders but, trying to follow the instructions, I have one folder called new-site, which contains the ttg-be files and another called test-site which contains the website (inc the gallery). Don't think it's far off working, but I'm uncertain about what links to fill in in Lightroom...

Re: Basics

who are you hosting with? (GoDaddy by chance?) There's a realpath() error
http://www.photographybyward.co.uk/test … verify.php

I have no problem getting to your Client Photography page (galleries.php) but the gallery link isn't working (because of the server error noted above)
this is probably also why you're getting the ttg-be could not be found error. Normally, ttg-be resides at the same server level as your Pages files, but you've got it in a different folder.
http://ce4.theturninggate.net/docs/doku … tion_setup

It looks like you're in a sub-folder rather than a sub domain (if it was a subdomain, the address would be
test-site.photographybyward.co.uk)

You can add images to your post by first putting them online ( I keep a folder in the root of my site for just this purpose) and then in your post, click on the image icon above the posting area (it's the one next to the color wheel) and past the url to the image in between the IMG tags.

Re: Basics

Hi Rod,
I'm hosting with Elite UK. I have my own virtual server. I must have misinterpreted the instructions regarding folders. I've now moved the ttg-be folder into the same folder as the website (test-site) and the contact page now appears).  I've asked Elite tp create a sub-domain for me for testing websites etc. Hopefully, that might work.
Cheers,
Dayve

Re: Basics

Hi Rod,
Elite have now set up a couple of sub domains for me. I've moved my new TTG website and gallery into this sub domain:
http://pbw.photographybyward.co.uk/. The site works except for the link to the gallery page.

Not sure if I'm setting up the site toot correctly. I just put a forward slash in the box on both website and the gallery.

I'm sure I'm doing something quite basically wrong, but not sure what...

Still in need of help :-)

Re: Basics

Everything looks fine to me. I see your Galleries page but there are no galleries in it.
Have you uploaded a gallery export (the entire exported folder) to the galleries/ folder?

can you provide the direct link to a gallery?

Re: Basics

and I'm still seeing an error when I run the autoindex/verify.php page

http://pbw.photographybyward.co.uk/lib/ … verify.php

this is usually a server issue and something Ben or Matt will need to comment on.

Those using GoDaddy often have a similar issue, which is addressed here:
http://community.theturninggate.net/post/2020/#p2020
Instead of editing the resources/autoindex/autoindex.php file you'd be editing the lib/autoindex/autoindex.php file

I don't know if that will help your situation or not

it should be the same as what you entered in Pages. If you used / then use that. Or you can put the full URL to the site:
http://pbw.photographybyward.co.uk/

can you post a link to the gallery?
