At the moment I'm using The Pages with Highslide gallery and was thinking of using The Publisher to make updating my galleries easier. I've just read a book on Lightroom by Scott Kelby and he (and other "experts") seem to think there is a strong chance that Adobe will drop the web module from Lightroom in future updates( LR5, LR6?).
Are there any plans to get around this if it happens - like making a stand-alone program for the design of the galleries and Pages and just using Lightroom for publishing.
I'm not worried about the cost of buying the TTG modules but I am concerned about spending a lot of time creating a web site that I may not be able to tweak or re-design in 12-18 months time.

I've not read that speculation, and have heard nothing from Adobe to indicate that would be the case. While the Web module is typically the least of Adobe's priorities for LR, I think it would be a poor decision on their part to drop it entirely. There are a lot of people who depend on it.

Well in his Lightroom 4 book Scott Kelby says "Adobe has ... well... they've kind of abandoned it" and in the video on this page http://kelbytraining.com/books/lr4 (about 3 minutes in) he goes on to say he thinks/hopes they may change the module to a proofing module.
When I hear comments like this from a person that must be close to Adobe I get a bit worried about long term future of plugins using this module.
Perhaps to safeguard the future of these modules (and your customers), you should consider a stand alone program in the way other plugin manufactures have done (Topaz for example).

Keep in mind, though, that Scott Kelby is an idiot who's done nothing but disparage the Web module from day one. He doesn't use it, and that's his loss. He's got a guy on staff that does his web work for him, and from what I've seen Scott would be better off using the Web module, because I have not been impressed by his guy's work. And when he says that nothing has changed, in several versions, he's just dead wrong. The Web module saw major changes in LR3 and LR4, they were just under-the-hood for developers, and not so outward facing as in many other modules. I've seen no indication whatsoever that Adobe has any intention to abandon the Web module, and the consensus among my experts -- a group that Adobe itself has assembled, and of which Scott Kelby is not a part -- is that its a valuable piece of the application that many, many people have come to depend upon, with that number increasing daily.

If it comes to that, I will consider looking into it. The big hurdle being that I have no idea how to create a standalone application. For now, it's a nonissue.

Out of curiosity, in which of his books and on what page number does Kelby make this statement?

The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4: book for digital photographers
page: xiii (part of the intro)
He doesn't have any chapter on the web module, but does have a supplemental chapter for it on his web site (below). On this page in the book he explains it this way:
It's on the web. I put it there because Adobe has...well..they've kind of abandoned it (not officially mind you but come on--they haven't really added any new features in the past two versions, so I can't [with a straight face] recommend that you use it at all). But just in case, I still updated it and posted the chapter on the web, so just think of it as a bonus you won't ever use.
Here's the "missing" chapter, which hasn't changed in this 4th edition.
http://kelbytraining.com/wp-content/upl … hapter.zip
My reading is that HE doesn't recommend it, and it's HIS opinion it's been abandoned ONLY because HE hasn't seen any new features.
I have been using it since the first version, and totally rely on it! I think many others would say the same thing, and if Adobe dropped it there would be an outcry.
PS - I'll bet the main reason this chapter isn't in the book - to save paper! The rest is it's probably just Kelby's odd sense of humor.

There is also the issue, if it was no longer available , then many , including myself would not upgrade ... therefore no outcry needed as they would be shooting themselves in the foot
I have that book and knew about his comments but in all honesty it is not worth any more effort typing about it

My understanding is that Scott doesn't see much value in the web module, and dismisses it, and by association photographers that use it. As such I would take his opinion on the current state and future of the web module with a huge grain of salt.
In my opinion Scott's dismissal on a feature that is highly used and valued by photographers reflects badly on him as an informed educator.

Matthew, after reading all the above replies I think I tend to agree with you on the future of the web module and I'll continue to develop my site using your plugins.
I have no knowledge of Scott and this is the first of his books I have purchased, perhaps there was something that upset him in the web module and he's had a downer on it ever since .
Long may the web module reign.

I have reached out to my contacts on the Lightroom team and they have assured me they have no intention of removing the Web module.
As for Kelby, the man rides high on his ego. And while some of his books I think are suitable for absolute beginners, I think there's almost always a better book by someone else for most everyone else. For Lightroom 4 books, for example, I'd go for books by Martin Evening, Victoria Bampton and Piet Van den Eynde.

LOL - I just stumbled on this, which I recommend reading
“Nobody” uses the Web module
