In LR, when clicking on the trigger, menu text expands with the correct color and correct background. However, on actual android device, clicking trigger causes the expand, but the menu items are the same color as the background.

the css shows that all those colors are the same (or very close to each other)
What colors have you assigned?

the css shows the background-color for the nav container as: #330219
background-color for #r2d2 menu : #330219
color for the li elements within the r2d2 menu : #33031A (which is very close to the background color)

This may be your problem. Your front page is controlled by Publisher using a Stage template. Have you updated this template? Your screen shot is from Pages.

that was the issue! This leads to a product enhancement request;
In BE/Publisher to provide a list of all deployed Galleries (what update would work against) and their versions of the base TTG template.

The plugin version is output into the template, in the document head. You can see it by checking the page source code.
