Hello,
I set up my galleries with the new frewall masonry layouts.
Compared to the old CE3 Masonry Layouts the new galleries are very solw and the thumbnail resolution ist very low.
Here are two examples:
CE4 with Masonry

Your thumbnail resolution is low because your thumbnails aren't large enough. Here's a thumbnail:

Compare to that the size it's appearing in your design, and you can see that the thumbnail is scaling up.
I'm not seeing any speed issues, but if I'm supposed to be seeing a comparison, I can't login to your CE3 gallery.

try making sure that the thumbnail height is set so that it's proportional to the width. In other words, if your images have a 2:3 aspect ratio and you've set thumbnail width to 200, set thumbnail height to 300.
You can do this either in the Appearance control pane directly under the Masonry layout settings or in the Output Settings control pane.

Or if you'd rather not think about math, just pull the height slider to maximum value, then set your width to an appropriate value for the gallery. All of your images will then be width-constrained.

Also, despite being larger in dimension, your CE3 thumbnails are actually smaller in file size than your CE4 thumbnails. Probably your CE3 gallery was exported with a lower quality value, leading to smaller sizes.
If you're using the default thumbnail quality for CE4, then you might consider taking it down one level to a Quality value of 69.

if using Publisher, you also need to republish the images. Make sure that the "Push metadata..." box is not checked in Publisher setup first.

I've just tried the Masonry Elastic and I love it. Not for all types of photos, but for many they look fantastic. Thanks for the tips about the thumbnail sizes too.
I also noticed slowness, however it depends on the browser. Firefox can be horrifyingly slow rendering the elastic ones, but IE is much faster - in some cases 10-15 times faster than Firefox (on the same machine). I haven't tried any other browsers. I've reduced images per page from 100 down to 50 to help. It would be great if there was anything that could be done to speed up the Firefox rendering. It's the main browser around here...

Hello Everyone,
I'm still not satisfied with the speed in Google Chrome. I reduced the image sizes and the JPEG Quality down to 69. I republished all my galleries (which took an awful lot of time!!!) and I reduced images per page down to 50.
It it better now....but still not great!
Another problem occurred on the way there. I have a Metadatabox with ISO, Shutter, Apature etc. underneath each image. Unfortunately some images don't show the metadata. Others do? What happened?

a couple of things. If you added the metadata or changed the metadata output settings after initial publication, you'll need to republish the images. You can check the "Push Metadata..." check box in Publisher set up to speed things up.
Perhaps the images have the metadata stripped from them? Are the images being published originals from the catalog or are they images that have been exported and added to the catalog? Some export settings will strip metadata.
Either way, it would be easier to help if you posted a link to a gallery exhibiting the problem

I still fail to see why you're having a problem with load speeds, unless it's something to do with your own network connection. I just visited your gallery at http://farbrausch.eu/FriendsIndex/andalusien-2013/ and it loaded damn fast. And that's in Chrome.
I've run speed measurements on CE4 vs. CE3 masonry galleries, and they tend to benchmark similarly (as most of the load is the thumbnail images, and nothing at all to do with scripts), with CE4 usually showing a slight lead. And my general impression in all of my testing is that Freewall is an improvement over the older Isotope script used by CE3.

With regard to the randomly missing captions, it sounds very similar to one of the things I described at http://community.theturninggate.net/post/23019/#p23019 (this one not actually related to LUA). Did you have multiple galleries publishing simultaneously by any chance? And what version/platform is LR?
