In CE4 Auto index , I can have 4 columns max with the cursor Album Columns . Is it normal? How to have more columns?

Using CE3 Auto index I was able to construct a home page for my site with a tightly packed grid of images with titles below.

How can I achieve a similar layout with CE4?

When I revisited CE3, I found that the math didn't always work the way it was supposed to. To eliminate circumstances under which breakage would occur, I had to scale back the number of columns to more manageable numbers.

Is there no way that you could include the "iconic-captioned" gallery style? Having just spent $85 upgrading to CE4 I'm disappointed to discover that the functionality has been reduced.

It exists, but is implemented differently, and more intuitively I think. You just need to not be looking for the old UI options. For example, see my own site:
http://campagnapictures.com/galleries.php
For how to get it done, see this:
http://ce4.theturninggate.net/docs/doku … uts#iconic
Basically, choose "Iconic", then set "Overlay Album Info" to No.
And with the new, easier management of custom thumbnails via publisher, I think you'll find it all much easier to manage than before.
