CE3 to CE4 migration

My migration last year from CE2 to CE3 took a lot of work. I spent significant time converting my CE2 look and feel to the various plug-ins in CE3, including a number of Publisher templates. Looking forward to CE4 but not so much in terms of potential time required for the transition. Do you plan to include documentation to smooth this process along?

User with too little time but coding is therapeutic.

Re: CE3 to CE4 migration

There will probably be a document covering migration, but it will be more about how to replace things mechanically (replacing publisher templates, wordpress themes, etc.) and not about design.

Like all major version leaps preceding it, CE4 is built almost entirely from foundations, taking into account modern design standards, my own revised best-practices, newly prototyped components, etc., so existing CE3 templates do not correlate in design.

Re: CE3 to CE4 migration

I understand that that much has changed between CE3 & CE4 templates. However, there are still a lot of template parameters that have remained the same.

I basically have to totally redesign all of my templates from scratch.

It would have made life a lot easier if there were a utility that would transpose those common parameters from a CE3 template to a new CE4 template. That way I wouldn't have to totally reinvent the wheel for every one of my templates.

Can I at least create one CE4 template, say for Pages, then copy that to the guts of a new Gallery CE4 template (like we used to do in CE3) so that common elements could be reused?

Re: CE3 to CE4 migration

you can still share templates between engines, as always.

Re: CE3 to CE4 migration

The settings look the same on the UI side of things, which is intentional so that people wouldn't be bewildered. But the values are often used in different ways in the code than they were previously. If such a utility existed -- and I'm really not interested in making one -- I think it would make more a mess of things than be of help.

Re: CE3 to CE4 migration

Re the mechanics of migrating from CE3 to CE4, what does the following from the Wiki mean?

2. The top-level galleries folder (the target folder) must match between CE3 and CE4.

I am currently using CE3 for WordPress, and have installed WordPress and the CE3 directories as shown here:

http://mydomain/wrdp/
http://mydomain/wrdp/galleries/
http://mydomain/wrdp/publisher/
http://mydomain/wrdp/ttg-be/
http://mydomain/wrdp/wp-admin
http://mydomain/wrdp/   -etc-

Am I supposed to create another galleries directory somewhere?  If so, where do you suggest?

My web site is currently a traditional site with a static home page containing a link to my WordPress blog (CE3 themed).  It is being transitioned to a site with the blog (CE4 themed) as the home page.  It will not be a photoblog - blog entries will be articles with embedded images, galleries, and links to CE4 galleries.

I struggled with the organization of the galleries and publisher directories when initially installing CE3 this spring and settled on the organization shown above based on input from this forum.  Is this still the best organization given my expected use of CE4 or would another approach serve my needs better.

Thanks,

Bill Cobb

Re: CE3 to CE4 migration

It means that if you had the CE3 /publisher/ folder in the root of the server, at the same level as the galleries/ folder  (and galleries is the top-level gallery folder you designated for CE3 Publisher), then you have to keep the same set up. ttg-be/ needs to be at the same server level as your galleries/ folder.

What you have set up should work fine, galleries/, publisher/, and ttg-be/ are at the same server level

Re: CE3 to CE4 migration

Thanks for the quick reply Rod.

My understanding of the migration concept may be the issue.  I interpreted the following to mean that we would be migrating  files in a source galleries folder on the server to a destination galleries folder on the server:

To migrate galleries, click on the Lightroom File menu, then Plug-in Extras, followed by Migrate
galleries from CE3 Publisher to CE4 Publisher. Select your source and destination then click OK.
Only those galleries that exist both in Lightroom and on the server will be copied. After migration, the
albums and album sets should be manageable via the CE4 Publisher instance.

Are we actually migrating the galleries in LR on my local computer to CE4?  After which we would clean up any remaining issues and then republish them to the existing directories on the server?

The latter makes more sense after thinking about how TTG uses LR resources.

Re: CE3 to CE4 migration

what the migration does is to transfer control of existing CE3 albums and album sets (that are currently under control of CE3 Publisher) to the control of CE4 Publisher.
It doesn't actually move the album and album set files on the server.

The source and destination are Publisher instances you've created in Lightroom.

Thanks Rod.  I think I understand it now and will give it a shot tomorrow.

Have a good weekend!

Re: CE3 to CE4 migration

I have a few more questions.  Based on the following:

Depending on whether your template names match between CE3 and CE4 Publisher, you may need to
edit each album and choose a new template before being able to publish further to that album.

... I tried to create another template for CE4 with the same name as the CE3 template.  Lightroom will not let me have two templates with the same name even though the CE4 template is located in a separate LR template directory.

Is there a way around this?

If I have to select a new template after the migration process, does this mean that I will have to create a new album title, slug, description, et cetera?

Probably because Publisher is not allowing duplicate names. how would it know which of the two to apply? Instead, overwrite the CE3 template with the CE4 template.

No, just change the template. That's the beauty of Publisher. If you want to change up the entire look of an album, just upload a new template and edit the album, selecting the new template.
