Updating to new versions

Is there an 'idiots guide' to updating to newer versions?  I am around 3 versions behind but I am loathed to update as I have everything working great and I would hate to cock it up and have to start from scratch.

Any help would be gratefully received .........

Re: Updating to new versions

for Publisher: http://ce3wiki.theturninggate.net/doku. … _upgrading

for Pages: http://ce3wiki.theturninggate.net/doku. … s_versions

for Cart: so far update instructions have been posted on the blog like this: http://theturninggate.net/2013/09/ce3-u … t-support/

for the rest, just install like you originally did. I find it easier to delete the old version before installing the new:

As to actually updating your site....I guess it depends on if the update addresses a problem you have or adds a feature you want. Personally, I don't update existing galleries, Pages, indexes, or Stage pages with every update.

But if you do update, you'd need to re-export each index, gallery, other page and upload to your site (no need to upload the images unless you've added any). When you update a gallery template for Publisher, all Albums using that template will be updated. Same with Autoindex templates and Album Sets.

If you're worried, create templates of everything in the Template Browser.

Re: Updating to new versions

Thanks Rod,
My site is a Wordpress site so I'm only using the plugins in LR4 to produce standard galleries, carts and client response galleries (some with auto index).   So I don't think my site or any galleries that I have published will be affected, do I have to reset all the panels on the right from scratch or can I just update the new version with my existing templates in the template browser?

I have a few weddings to publish so once they are done I will have a go at updating them, I just hope it doesn't go horribly wrong!!
Thanks again,
Barry

If you're updating from an earlier TTG version, like CE, or CE2 to CE3, then you'll need to start from scratch. If it's just updates within a version, then no.

Sorry, I thought you meant you were three updates behind. Reading comprehension isn't my strong point this morning. wink

Re: Updating to new versions

What I did when updating between CE versions was to first copy any text within galleries, indexes, etc. to text files, just to have all that backed up.
Then I created a template for Pages that came close to what I had with CE2. In your case, you can design for any of your plugins and save a new template. Use the template sharing technique to apply all your styling to the other plugins.
Now that you have templates for each engine start going through your galleries and indexes in Lightroom and apply the new templates. You'll probably need to first fine tune things like gallery index settings. Once you do that for the first gallery, update the template settings.
You can either copy any block text first or just grab it from saved text files (if you made any). After the new template is applied, paste in the text and fill in the Album Title and Description fields. Export and upload.

One thing that can make this a lot easier is to implement Publisher. That way you can make one template for your galleries, one template for your CRGs and one template for indexes (Publisher templates, not to be confused with the templates saved in the Template Browser)
This will save you from having to export and upload every single index or gallery. You'll just need to create Publisher collections and publish the pictures.

If you have lots of galleries you can count on spending a bit of time on this, that's why implementing Publisher would be a good idea.

If you don't care about updating old galleries, then this will be a lot easier. Just create a new design in CE3 and keep going from there. You can update your earlier indexes to CE3 versions and keep your old galleries within those indexes without any problems.

(If you've been using phplugins to manage navigation, you'll won't be able to use the old version with CE3 as the styling for CE3 navigation has changed)
