Is there a way to change the "Subject" line for incoming email from the contact form for Backlight 2?
What I get now is "A new message has been received."

yes. Go to the Backlight menu: Admin > Settings > Languages
Click on Manage Language for your language.
Change the email subject wording under Contact Forms
