BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Hi,
I am upgrading from CE4 to BL2.
I copied the 4 components (.htaccess, index.php, backlight, galleries) into the subdomain I used for testing after deleting everything.
After giving the order number and email address, I get an error message :
"The installer was unable to connect to the server : https://get.theturninggate.net/install/has_backlight"

Window 10 , Firefox 64.0

I tried with MS Edge with the same result.
Thanks for your help,
Bernard

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Have you tried again lately? Just wondering if the ttg server might have been inaccessible for a while. I just tried installing in a test folder and it worked fine.

Do you know what version of php your site is using?

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Hi Rod,
I just tried it now, and it did not work.
php is 5.5, although it's declared at the domain level, not at the subdomain level. Not sure if it's important.

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

php 5.5 should be good enough. Could be that your host is blocking attempts to connect to the ttg server?

I wouldn't know how to deal with that, but Ben should. Consider emailing him and including FTP access credentials.

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Can you ask your host whether they have blocked access from PHP to external servers, and if so, for them to allow access to https://get.theturninggate.net

If that’s not blocked, can you ask them to perform a traceroute from your server to that location and provide us with the result?

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem and the same configuration :
- upgrading from CE4 to BL2.
- I also copied the 4 components (.htaccess, index.php, backlight, galleries) into the subdomain
- After giving the order number and email address, I get an error message :
"The installer was unable to connect to the server : https://get.theturninggate.net/install/has_backlight"
- PHP 5.5

I sent a message to my host as Ben advised.
I will keep you informed of their response.

Or, maybe, I'm doing all too fast ?
I've ordered Backlight an hour ago and received the message "Thank you for your order. This email confirms that you have made a purchase for the following items and that payment has been approved. You will receive an order email detailing how to access your purchase shortly."
Do I have to wait for this email ?

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Hi Regine, orders should be valid straight away. If for some reason your order hadn’t yet come through the message would be along the lines of ‘the order could not be found’.
Which company are you hosting with?

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Hi Regine (Française ?) and Ben,
My host is OVH as well !
I have made 2 requests for support to OVH, but no answer yet.
My OVH offer is 'PERSO 2010' , that could be important. What's yours Regine ?
Digging a bit in the OVH documentation, I found that a .htaccess file containing 'RewriteEngine on' , which is the case for Backlight, is available for all OVH shared offers, except '20gp'.
I don't know if it is a problem, but I cannot find what 20gp means in OVH terms.
I also changed the php engine from 5.5 to 5.6, but still same error message.

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Hi,
Oui Bernard, je suis Française ! Donc on est 2 Français à avoir le même problème, avec le même hébergeur...
I continue in english (not very good, sorry about that...)
I have the same OVH offer "Perso 2010". I sent a message to OVH today, but it's the week-end... The first who will have an answer from OVH or a solution tells to the other ?
Bernard, I see that the 20gp is an old offer that has been replaced by "Perso 2010".

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Hi Regine,
Glad not to be alone with that problem.
I have now sent 3 messages to OVH. In the OVH forum, some people are complaining about the support.
For the very old 'PERSO 2010' offer, we now pay about half the price of the current 'PERSO' offer, so I would not be surprised hat our offer does not have all the bells and whisles !!

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Hi Ben,
The OVH support does not help for 'this kind of problem' !!!!
I was convinced the problem was the old 'Perso 2010' OVH offer (not supporting the mod_rewrite function) , so I switched to the current 'Perso' offer, and bad luck it still does not work.
I am really stuck, do you have a suggestion ?
Thanks ,
Bernard

If support is not able or willing to help me, I would bring my business somewhere else.

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

OVH support finally answered, that RewriteEngine is supported, but I knew it already since I switched to another offer were it is explicitely mentioned.

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Hi Bernard, this shouldn't be related to RewriteEngine.  Can you provide me with a Backlight admin login via email?  I'll use the FTP access you gave me and the Backlight login to try and debug this, in case there's something more I can tell from the code.

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Hi Ben,
The problem seems to be solved as I wrote you by PM. I just changed php 7.2 to 5.6 in the ovhconfig file at the root of the subdomain, and I was able to connect to the TTG server and install BL2 and start giving the settings.

Happy new year Matt and Ben !!!!

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Hi Bernard, I'm glad to hear.  Looking at the error you had, and the fix, it looks like your host hasn't included the proper connection support in PHP for version 7.2.  Other cases we've had, including Regine's, look to have the support for connections within PHP, but not to allow the connections on a network level.

Hi Regine, since you're on the same host as Bernard, I'd hope that the same fix will work.  Can you explain what you've done to try and fix it?  Perhaps Bernard can assist?

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Again, it seems to work, touch wood as they say in England.
I hate to say it, but I don't really understand what the problem was and how it is ok now.
What I have done :
. better separate the working CE4 domain (/www) and the test subdomain (/www/test/  is now   /test/)
OHV multisite definitions and the test folder need to be changed.
. define a separate ovhconfig file for each (sub)domain at the root of each.

Régine, I will send you the ovhconfig files by pm as they are specific to OVH, the last bit is that I changed php 7.2 to 5.6 in the test (Backlight) environment , and then it worked !

Comments are welcome, web hosting and network are not my specialities !

Re: BL2 Installer unable to connect to server

Hi thanks all for your help !
- I tried the same things than Bernard.
- I created a new subdomain /testbis
- Added the config file
app.engine=php
app.engine.version=5.6
http.firewall=none
environment=production
container.image=stable
- Added the Backlight Files
- Gone on  http://testbis.f-comme-photo.fr/backlight/installer/
- Wrote the order ID and mail
but... I have the same message "The installer was unable to connect to the server: https://get.theturninggate.net/install/has_backlight/
- And the same problem on http://www.testbis.f-comme-photo.fr/bac … installer/

I start to despair...
