PHP & MySQL - web host upgrading to new versions

Hi....

My web host (westhost.com) just emailed to say they will soon be upgrading PHP and MySQL as follows:

PHP will be upgraded from 7.0 to the latest version of 7.2.

MySQL will be upgraded from MariaDB 10.1 to the latest version of MariaDB 10.2.

Will these upgrades create any issues with Backlight?  If so, what should I do about it?

Thank you!

John

Some have reported problems with php 7.2
Does your host give you control over the php version you use?

Re: PHP & MySQL - web host upgrading to new versions

Hi Rod,

Yes, my host will let me continue to use PHP 7.0, but only for one month.  They say:

"Starting July, 2018, WestHost will be upgrading our servers to PHP 7.2. This is considered a minor PHP upgrade. Our servers will allow one month to revert back to PHP 7.0 and correct any of these issues before PHP 7.0 is permanently removed. Essentially, this will allow clients with any code issues to run the older PHP version while updating their site."

So, I will have to use 7.2 soon.

John

Re: PHP & MySQL - web host upgrading to new versions

From other questions on the forum, it seems that Ben has to keep playing catchup with new versions of php.
Looks like he's already addressed the issues in 7.2:

Re: PHP & MySQL - web host upgrading to new versions

Thanks, Rod....

I appreciate that Ben keeps Backlight compatible with the changes that our web hosts throw at us.  (I'm a novice and I don't even know what PHP and MySQL are, so I'm extra happy that all of you do!)

Re: PHP & MySQL - web host upgrading to new versions

Hi John, as above.  We keep Backlight updated for compatibility with the latest versions of PHP.  Unfortunately, each version of 7 has made changes that have broken our code in minor ways, that being 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2.  We endeavour to do our best to fix these issues as they crop up.
