Is there a simple way to place the download, gps and maybe other icons/buttons (as needed) on the top of the single image display next to the shopping cart icon?

Download and map icons already appear above the single image display next to the shopping cart icon.
You'll need to enable Maps in the album set up under the Features tab and enable downloads in the template.
Not sure how simple it would be to place other buttons.
There is a ttg_single_top phplugins hook that encompasses the image and related metadata. I don't think that this will control the content above the image though.
how comfortable are you with jQuery?
You might be able to use jQuery to add something there using the .before() or .insertBefore() methods
