Is there any recommendation on the size of images for inclusion in a Pangolin Theater Full-Screen Slideshow? Is 1000px on the long dimension big enough? And how about ppi? This is a balancing act between quality and speed; anybody found the secret formula?

ppi means nothing on the web, it's all pixels.
The size you publish depends on a few things. How good do you want the images to look on large monitors? You may need to publish 1600 px images if you want high quality on most all monitors.
There are also the slideshow overlay options to consider if you don't want to publish larger images. The overlays can mitigate lower resolution image quality problems.

Ah, ok I see. Just pixels wide by pixels high.

OK, I think I got the above sorted.
I want to report an observation I made on full screen slide show ZoomIn modes. When either ZoomIn or ZoomIn2 was used, the zoom was very jerky and halting using Microsoft Edge browser. Good on all other browsers I tried. I am not using the zoom modes, but for what it is worth, I am reporting what happened.
