Perhaps I did not install Wordpress correctly. You stated that it should be installed in the same domain as /backlight so I installed in
/backlight. Was that wrong??
And if so how do I recover from that.

Should I have installed WP in /public_html?

it should be in a folder that is at the same level as the backlight/ folder
backlight/ is in the root of your site. The folder where you installed WordPress should also be in the root of your site:
public_html/
backlight/
blog/
Wordpress installed inside blog/ folder

you'll need to delete all the existing WordPress files first. If some of those happen to have the same name as Backlight files you'll need to re-upload the backlight files.
Put your WordPress installation in a sub-folder of the root. It should be at the same level as backlight/, not inside the backlight/ folder.

How will I know what the BL files are: The WP files are?
Download Wordpress, download Backlight. Look at the downloaded files and compare to what's on your server.
