Create a test site

I currently have my site set up using CE3.  Both the original CE3 folders and the BL folder reside in my Public_html folder.  I want to create a test site using BL and eventually migrate to BL.  However, I don't want my old site to go down.  Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Create a test site

you can either create a test site in a sub-folder or a sub-domain. I prefer to use sub-domains because they behave like the main domain.

For a sub-folder, use your FTP client program to create a test folder in the root of your site. Upload all the Backlight stuff to this folder.
Sign in to Backlight by going to

http://yoursite.com/test-folder/backlight/

For a sub-domain, you need to sign in to your host's C-Panel and create the sub-domain there. This will add a folder to the root of your site. Upload all the Backlight stuff to that folder..

Thanks Rod.  I'll give it a try.

Re: Create a test site

Rod, let me see if I have this right, for a sub-domain.  My domain is farbmanphotography.com.  I would go into the C-Panel or my FTP program(CuteFTP) and create a sub-domain within the Public_html folder.  I would set it up, for example, as http://testsite.farbmanphotography.com/backlight.  Would I have to register that new domain name?

Re: Create a test site

you need to create a sub-domain from your host's C-Panel. You don't need to register a new domain name.

In the C-panel, look for the Domains section. There should be a sub section for sub-domains.

Or just use a regular sub-folder that you create via FTP. This would not be a sub-domain but it still works for the purpose.
